I'm just listening to this Shane Mosley interview and at some point he mentions how he believes that Berto would be a more difficult opponent than Margarito. And he says how Berto is fast and fights on impulse while Margo thinks before he punches and is slower than Mosley which allows him to know where the punches are coming and react. Add to that the fact that Nazim is gonna train Mosley against Margo probably much like he trained Hopkins against Pavlik... Also age is an issue for Mosley much like it was for Hopkins and Pavlik and Margo are going to bring the same gameplan which is to come forward and wear the opponent out.. Here is the interview http://www.thering-online.com/video/shane_mosley_oneonone_interview/ if history repeats itself we might just see Mosley with his hands up at the end of the fight. Mosley is still around #15 on my p4p list btw.
Two things that I disagree with this interview, first margo doesnt think that much about his output in punches cause if he did, he would have the worst headache , the guy throws around 1000 punches per fight, so I dont think there isn't much thinking about this. And second, Mosley cannot do a hopkins because he is a fighter who depends more on his physical attributes (speed and power), what is brilliant about mosley is that he has managed to keep some of these attributes during the years, mainly because he is a gym rat, happy holidays!
In one respect, Berto would be a much tougher fight than Margarito. He is less predictable, has a lot more speed and has shown to have quite capable power at 147. He's young, and hungry, and hasn't as much milage on him as Antonio Margarito does. However, Margarito has shown a frightening punch resistance, whereas Berto has already been hurt against some lower level fighters. Additionally, Margarito is a 12 round fighter that will be going full speed ahead from opening round to last. Berto would be not setting that kind of pace, or at least his previous fighst wouldn't suggest it. I think where Mosley loses this fight is his inability to keep up with Margarito's pace, and I think, his inability to keep Marg honest. If Cotto doesn't hurt Margarito after landing every single shot in the book for 5 brutally one sided rounds, then Mosley, who was best at Lightweight, won't be doing it either. I just don't see Sugar Shane having the legs and stamina to be able to keep Margarito off of him for 12 rounds. Mosley vs Margarito 4-5 years ago, is a different fight, but I know where my money is in January.
Berto is a way harder fight and everybody should know. Margarito anit ****!!! however thinks this guy is great is smoking that BOMB!!! MOlsey is going to beat the hell out of Margarito then we can get a Cotto-Mosley II!!! which I thought was a draw but cant argue with 7 to 5 for Cotto.
Mosley hasn't shown that type of dynamic ability that Hopkins has shown. Hopkins has shown that against a threatening larger longer armed fighter he can increase his activity level and completely outbox them. Mosley is a warrior and simply trys to battle with EVERY single fighter he fights. I haven't seen many fights where's he's done much boxing, except maybe the Fernando Vargas second fight. He has the capability, but how many times have you seen him do that thing where he starts flailing wildly after getting hit. He can't take a punch without getting wild. He also doesn't jab much. The only chance he has is if he uses an effective jab/jab hook combination to keep Margarito at distance. But then he would need a lot of stamina to do this, and that's the real culprit and the real reason I think he's going to lose.
some solid points. Mosley is much more prone to go gun-ho than Hopkins and lose track of a gameplan. But IMO he has the physical ablity and skills to implement any gameplan. thats why i tihnk Nazim might be the difference maker here.
well this thread was made on the day that Berto and Mosley fought on the same card. And also, Berto fights more like Taylor than Cotto. Alot more.
Yea but i'm refering to the actual events that took place that are very very similar.. Taylor and Cotto were both undefeated young stars who were talented athletes that could box and had a good combo of power and speed. First off, Both of them fought and won very close, controversial victories against veteran legends, Mosley and Hopkins. Then both ran into power houses sluggers. Tough psychologically hard men that could punch and though not elite athletes or stellar boxers, had a high degree of willpower, Pavilik and Margarito. And the young stars were dominated. Finally both of those Powerhouses fought the veteran legends who barely lost to the young undefeated stars. The Powerhouses were massively favored to win, but each was taken to school and spanked by the wily veteran legends to a degree that was flat out shocking.
