I would take Brown in this one. Nice power, crafty, punchers were straighter and quicker than Mayorga. Better overall skill in my opinion.
Brown of '88 schools the rugged Mayo of 2003 over 12 or 15 rds..... If its a 12 rounder, Brown wins the dec.... If its a 15 rounder, Brown gets a 14th rd. TKO over Rico Mayo.... MR.BILL:bbb:deal
Brown should win easily, but I will never forget Vincent Pettways crushing righthand that had Brown unconscious laying on the canvas punching at the air. Brown could certainly get knocked out by Mayorga.
Mayorga is a guy who is so easy to pick against because of his flaws but during his relatively short prime he would have been a handful for a lot of guys who should beat him on paper due to his power, durability, and unpredictability. Id guess Id favor Brown but jeez, it wouldnt be a surprise at all to see Mayorga win or even KO him.
I am not sure why but when I picture this in my head I see Mayorga winning, and I am not a Mayorga fan. Simon was not the biggest fighter and Mayorga was big, so I think he could offset the power of Simon Brown. I pick Mayorga in a SD.
Brown had his flaws, but he was relaxed and comfortable in there, as well as fairly durable in his prime at least. Not the kind of fighter mayorga's unorthodox aggression could take advantage of imo.It would need a better practioner of that approach that Ricardo to do the job. a giant sung-kil Moon would get it done.
Entertaining fight, and Mayorga could well hurt Brown, but this is only ending one way. Mid to late round Ko for Brown. A giant Sung-Kil Moon is a scary proposition.
The vision of Brown getting crushed by Pettway is haunting the decision making here. That was the beginning of a very precipitous downslide in his career. He was already a bit shopworn at that point. Think instead of his KO's over Terry Norris and Mo Blocker.
You can ALWAYS find the guys who are new to the sport. Brown would have beaten the **** outta Mayorga, and KO'd him late.
