 That's only based on the thought that Rocky just lets Joe bang him in the body. Rocky will bang downstairs right back. Joe wearing down and stopping Rocky. That's funny. It might be comparable to Foreman bombing out Liston. A huge puncher's long shot against Joe. Man you can't let up on the drivel... I always seem to have a problem only with this matchup. I just feel there's a lack of thoughtful analysis in styles and strengths.
i think it's close. if you include foreman, quarry, ellis, chuvalo and oscar he fought solid competition. even mathis could be included. remember he fought in the best heavyweight era ever and even though he didn't have that many fights, they were significant rocky fought a number of ATG in Walcott, Charles and Moore but you can't discount their ages. Rocky also fought some good top 10 contenders but i don't think they were as good as frazier's. Overall they're nearly even, with maybe a slight edge to frazier
This is tough and I tend to go back and forth in my mind each time one of these threads pop up. Two of my all time favorites but I cannot help but lean toward Frazier for a Decision or late round stoppage. A brutal war demonstrating all the redeeming qualities of two excellent Champions.
I don't include Foreman because those were losses. That proves nothing. So take off the Ali win on his resume and their resumes are quite comparable. It's definitely in my top 3 H2H fights I'd pay to see. Possibly #1
Nice to leave out his three fights with the greatest heavyweight that ever lived. Predictable. A 1970 Jimmy Ellis was every bit as good to me as faded versions of Charles, Moore and Walcott. Prime Bonavena and Quarry were far better than anyone else Rocky ever fought. So was Joe Bugner. I'd take him over Rex Layne, Lee Savold, Roland LaStarza and Don Cockell in a heartbeat.
i can see this: foreman can be taken off BUT ali is better than any win on rocky's resume. with that win, it gives frazier the edge. without it, as you said, i can definitely see them near even. in fact, without ali, frazier's definitive win an argument could be made for rocky (but i still learn towards frazier cause i'm a fan!)
And if you took of Walcott ... ? You base it on fact. Frazier fought and beat the better fighters. Does not make him a lock but only an amateur would and has called it a mismatch.
rocky is blessed with having 3 ATG on his resume; the problem is they were all on the downside of their careers. i personally rate his epic wins against charles at least on par with his walcott wins. moore is incredible BUT he was just too small to deal with the rock
I didn't leave out anyone dip****. Obviously his Ali win his biggest claim to fame. Rocky never got to fight an Ali. Even if that was a rusty 3 and a half year off Ali. Jimmy Ellis couldn't even make it out as a MW but he's superior than on top of his game ATG like Walcott? Your **** is laughable. 1949-1952 has a live chance at upsetting Frazier. When did Jimmy Ellis ever beat someone of the caliber of a Joe Louis or lead scoring for 13 rounds against an ATG like Marciano? The crude Bonavena was superior than Moore and Charles? You got to be joking. I think Walcott, Moore, Charles are better than Ellis, Quarry, and Bonavena without a doubt. The fact Bonavena trouble Frazier only leads you to believe otherwise. He also troubled a 70 rusty Ali but lost to just about every superior boxer out there. Bugner was good and possibly underrated but didn't beat a whole lot of people on a world class stage. I think I might pick Bugner over LaStarza but with much hesitation and little confidence. In fact, it would probably be a close fight. You look at Bugner's weight but he was soft hitting HW. Bugner would trouble Rocky less than LaStarza could, stylistically though. You referring to me? Who called this a mismatch? If I took off Walcott than Frazier's resume is better. Point I'm making is most look at Rocky and says... "Fought old and small guys." His resume is comparably and superior in my eyes to Frazier if you strip of the FOTC win. Stylistically, Rocky has an advantage over Frazier I feel. Of course, I would think picking Rocky was crazy if I believed that Frazier hit harder and clearly fought much bigger and better men. You have to remember, outside the Walcott fight Rocky was incredibly dominant. And in that fight he was blind for 3-4 rounds.
bonavena can be overrated at times but he, like bugner (who i completely forgotatsch) were solid opposition. overall frazier faced, i feel, better top 10 opposition. rocky beat more ATG opposition. the definitve win on frazier's resume puts him a notch up but charles and walcott were damn good fights and incredible fighters. charles especially, again, was a tremendous heavyweight and was still very much skilled and quality against marciano. it's really a very small gap, if any between them.
