    Simple Answer:

In professional boxing, a welterweight boxer weighs in at between just above 140 pounds (63.5 kg) and up to the limit of 147 pounds (66.7 kg).

Welterweight title is a title at stake on a championship fight between 2 welterweight boxers.

Clarification: Some people refer to welterweight title as 147 lb. title. It's wrong since 147 is just the limit for the welterweight division. In reality, welterweight title is the 140.1 to 147 lbs. title.

    ;)

    Right.

And I bet you've seen many welterweight champions come in for a fight at 140.1-141 pounds, eh?

Let's not also forget catchweights shrink the range from 140.1 to 145 ;)...NOT making it a TRUE WW fight :good:deal

    You're right.

Catchweights are almost as old as boxing.

I can't think of any right off my head but technically a welterweight champion can come in at that weight. It's not against any boxing rules and regulations. ;)

    The limit is 147lbs.

I say if a fighter want's to weigh 112lbs pounds against a WW so be it.
But why force a fighter to weigh less than he has to?

If the limit is 147lbs, Then so be it.

NO... having a fight at 145 didn't shrink the welterweight division to 140.1 to 145 lbs.... the upper limit is still 147 lbs. ... It just happened that both boxers agreed to fight at a limit of 145 lbs. ;) Well within the welterweight division range of weights...

Technically, yes. But realistically, that's not the case. Fighters will always come in at a weight that's as close as possible to the highest limit.

And personally, I never liked the idea of a catchweight anyway.

When Henry Armstrong took Barney Ross's Welterweight Title off him at the end of the thirty's he weighed in at 133 while Ross was 142, never gonna happen in this day and age but still some feat.

Of course, most boxers want to maximize their weight utilization (or advantage) and usually weigh-in at the division's permitted upper limit but on some special cases, a boxer opted not to have the higher weight limit in order to have advantage in other department like for example the speed department...

If a boxer doesn't come in at the maximum upper limit of the division, we usually speculate that he built for speed and/or he has a great training camp that he's well within the division limit...

    True, good post.

PS: Cotto on the other hand, doesn't want to gain a speed advantage (and won't gain one if he attempts it, weighing 145 won't make a difference), and is known to have trouble making a weight that's lower than 146-147 for the last 3 years or more.
