There was a huge disadvantage in reach - Mayweather 183 cm, Hatton 165 cm - but Ricky could have made up that with more short, sharp punches. Hatton could have jabbed short and actually did 22 seconds into the fight and had Floyd out of balance with that accurate, hard left hook but took 3 right hands in the last 10 seconds of the opening round... He started the second with a big left hook again and had Floyd stepping back before the first ref intervention ( 1:35 second left on the clock) but ate another big right ( 1:16 s left on that 2nd)... Each time, Hatton would try to walk in str8 up, he was very much a target to right hands and left hooks. Mayweather just had to take a little step back to have space to land that right on his face and that's really why Ricky started holding - he was getting hit and hurt at punch range - Mayweather used the left forearm to keep him from holding b.c. Ricky had no plan B and was into that game all night long... I thought the fight would be over in the eight when to my great surprise, Hatton came off that corner with a straight, short right counter that stopped Floyd from finishing him right there... Hatton was not intellectually/scientifically prepared to get in there with a good move, only physically superbly conditioned at 145 pounds and that is Graham's fault - that punch bag routine psyched up Ricky for the attack but did not train him appropriately to avoid the technical mismatch.
He doesn't punch wide at all, those short left hooks tagged Floyd right on the kisser and remember that Mayweather is a fast defensive mover. Ricky simply couldn't move his head n body cause he has to keep his short arms close to his body to unleash those power punches that would have Floyd's respect - it is a vicious circle in fact - couldn't move his body and head to tag him with power but by doing so, he's wide open to get tagged himself ( It's not me that talk in circles, that's how it is). The only trick that could have worked was faster footwork and feints coming in but he was visibly too nervous to do that methodically. Floyd was too God Damn relaxed and you can confirm this when they were in the locker room - Ricky shadow boxing even before the Lacy-Manfredo fight and Mayweather talkin to one of the kids and smilling to the camera.
The reason Hatton lost is because Floyd is the best boxer in the world and Hatton isn't. Those knocking Hatton might like to take a long list of the great fighters who have failed to defeat the undefeated Floyd.
Funny people are talkig about reach now when before the fight I said that the reach advantage PBF had couldn't be overlooked. This was one of the easiest big fights to call in a long time it really was. No way was a master defensive counter-puncher going to lose to a guy with no jab, no effective guard and who comes in open squared up 90% of the time. PBF was stylistic nightmare for Ricky and I tried telling people but they wouldn't listen to sound logic.:-( Either they were blinded by irrational hate or love.
Saying Hatton lost because his arms are too short is like saying Howard Stern is ugly because his nose is too big. :good
