Just had a chance to watch the Khan fight without my biased blinkers on and I have to say that was a simply incredible performance from Amir Khan. Gomez stratergy was exactly what I had expected but the quality and variety of Khans punch selection was something which was hugely suprising. He put his punches together with good power and I don't think there is a lightweight in the world who could have stood and traded on even terms with Khan last night. Once again the knockdown was a worry, but the speed at which he recovered both against Limond and Gomez is very impressive. Felix Trinidad suffered similer knockdowns in a number of his fights against the likes of Oba Carr, Antony Stevens (non-punchers) so I don't find it career ending that he doesn't have a Eubank chin. That was the most impressive performance of his career and as promised I give Khan credit where credits due. There was nothing wrong with the stoppage IMO- Gomez had, had his best moments and I didn't want to see him take anymore. So to close... For me, last night Amir Khan became a major player in the lightweight division. Not because he beat a top ten lightweight (I'm not that blinkered) but it was the manner in which he dealt with a live challenge from a spirited, hard punching, veteran.
the piston like combo he put together midway through the fourth (i think) was absolute class. he has unbelievably quick hands. great fight, really enjoyed it. lots of credit to gomez, i thought he was shot, proved me wrong.
Agreed, I was cheering for Gomez but hats off to Khan. Peopel will focus on the negative of the KD but the way he fired back when hurt and put his shots together was impressive. The way he came back and dominated and dealt with the pressure and pain Gomez brough showed intangibilities. He also got busted by a very a nice bodyshot but landed his own bodyshot KD a bit later. I'm not sure I agree that Khan can trade like that with anyone. Pacman would eat him out. Juan Diaz may bust him up at mid range
Another point: Have we seen a British fighter this exciting since Hamed? I think not, the Gomez/Limmond fights were edge of the seat stuff imagine how exciting it will be against world class opposition Im a fan again and I hated Khan last week
Great post Jeff. Theres been a lot of negativity from posters & admittedly some of it is justified, but I too thought Khan performed well. He hit Michael with some sickening shots that would defintiely cause any lightweight trouble. He does make mistakes but showed he has the heart to match the hype. That salvo he unleashed in the 4th after being hit with that body punch was superb & eye catching.
He fought well, but I think the chin is a major worry. He needs to be able to control the distance better with his jab as well.
I don't know, I can't really agree with that I agree that Gomez is a tough proposition for a few rounds, he'll keep coming, and he'll apply the pressure But truth be told he was considerably smaller than Amir and his best days were behind him I think a lot of this boils down to how much you think Gomez had left. I don't think he had that much really Still, it was a decent enough test with Gomez's experience, style, mind games. It was a thoroughly respectable win for a 21 year old with 17 fights. But I can't see how a win over Michael Gomez at LW tells us much about Amir at the top level of the division... and it's Amir that keeps talking about himself in those terms..
Fail. He did ot become a major player in the lightweight division ermm, we have Casamayor as champ, Campbell, 2 Diaz's, Pacman, Marquez, Guzman, Romanov...the division is too good for a boy like Khan who looks good when giving it against mediocre oposition, but simploy cant take it. Gomez WAS NOT a live challenger, he was a very old 31, hadnt done 12 rounds in years and was at his best at super featherweight, and even thn he was not world class but yet he still decked Amir Khan! He's not ready for a world title shot but i dont think he will ever be ready, the lightweight division is way too good for him and even if he is patient enough to hold out and moves his large frame to light welter where the level isnt as good, those guys naturally hit a harder which maximises Amirs main weakness but they are also used to taking harder punches which takes away one of his main assets. A great fight, but no a great peformance. :bart
Maybe a move up in weight would eliminate the chin problems ala De La Hoya. The jab can be worked on.
Yeah I'm the same It's like, we didn't know what he could be, what he could achieve... the potential was enormous A win like last night would be great for any other prospect but for me, it has actually lowered the ceiling - again - on what Amir can become He said himself he wants to dominate the division. Well, I don't see any evidence he can do this, but I DO see evidence that suggests he can't... In a nutshell, he is finding his level way, way too soon in my opinion
What do you think the fundamental problems with his defence are? To me it seems his lack of head movement.
Fail? Are you a teacher or something? That was a world class performance last night. If you can't see that your a hater. He got hit twice in the fight.
Wow - its funny.... I was unimpressed with Khan before this fight and now he's the best thing since ... Kevin Mitchell and everyone else who rated him thinks he's shite.. lol
