Well that certainly doesn't help. He's quite static and upright, which ain't good if you don't move your head an inch. He also lazily drops his hands. That is almost habitual, I thought he'd solved it, but guys like Kristjansen and St Clair were masking the problem because they didn't throw much back. That is ingrained into his style, and he'll only solve it sparring constantly with a focus on keeping them up His overall defensive package is fairly weak, which is why he'd benefit from Mayweather Sr, who will also do wonders with his inside game. His inside game doens't exist. He can't even clinch.
If he is to change trainer to someone like Mayweather he'll need to base himself out there. I remember when Roach "trained" Arthur it was in name only.
Get him out to America I say. Maybe it will focus him, out of his comfort zone with all the yes men and his knob mates around him They won't suffer fools in the gyms over there
I'm convinced this is the route Khan must take. The savvy, dedication and toughness Benn and Lewis amongst others have shown after going stateside proves it. The beauty for Khan is that he is so young and hasn't suffered a potentially devastating loss yet either. However it may take a loss to wake him up to the fact that he's not progressing as he should be.
He should also leave Warren who will now put him in with more nobodies. He needs more fights like the Gomez one, fights he can learn from and be tested in. Warren will continue to feed him feather fisted SFW's and that will be to Khan's detriment rather than benefit. He should train and fight in the States. Get a trainer that will improve his defence and in-fighting and quality sparring with pressure fighters. He doesn't need to be headlining events at this stage. Let him fight on big undercards in the States with gradually improving opponents.
What about the one that Gomez was going to win? As an aside, can anyone remember who picked Khan KO5.....:hi:
Sorry Jeff but I'm not as optimistic as to how Khan would fare fighting on a level playing field so to speak. A more evenly matched opponent than Gomez may have beaten Khan in my opinion. For me, last nights fight actually highlighted Khans flaws even more and confirmed the doubts about his suspect chin. Yes he has tremendous speed and a fighters heart but I'm genuinely unconvinced about him at world level.
Agree completely with this. Khan has shown he's a real fighter and has heart, but NOTHING else. He gets taken to school and finished in 6-7 rounds by any top 10 lightweight. His punching power is far from impressive. Talk about lack of one-punch power, he sometimes couldn't floor Gomez with an accumulation of a dozen shots. And Mike's punch-resistance is not exactly world-class these days. Pac had seven fights against the great Mexican triumvirate of MAB, EM and JMM and wasn't floored once. Khan's flurries would bounce off him or miss completely, as they often do. If Limond and Gomez can deck Khan, Manny nails him to the canvas in 2-3 rounds tops. If Khan sat down on his punches - instead of throwing them on the move - he'd generate more power, but his handspeed and punch output would go down accordingly, and he would also be a more stationary target himself - which, with his chin, would spell disaster. I'm not a Khan-hater, but he should not be mentioned in the same sentence as any of the lightweight champs at present. His team should have a re-think and, hopefully, realise that Amir cannot afford to bypass the British and European route, as they are currently doing. I think he needs to fight someone like Thaxton before even dreaming about a world title.
Can you imagine what Katsidis would do to him if he landed? Kat is bigger than Gomez, fights the same style but is a MUCH bigger puncher with a bigger reach. Khan would be in serious trouble. That said Khan has the speed and power to stop him, as Kat has a shaky chin too, but I would fancy Kat to stop Khan inside 3 rounds.
Khan need's to stop calling out Pacquiao and get a least 3 more fight's under his belt. Last night his speed and combination's were looking very good but i'm afraid that's all he's been working on because he took too many shot's and that cuff around the ear shouldn't have put him down. Gomez is small, old and not even european class and if he could drop khan with a left hook what would pacman do to him?
