Benn and Eubank - rivals forever

    By Shaun Brown
Barry Hearn – Eubank’s former promoter: “It was one of the great fights of our generation, in front of a sell out crowd at the (Birmingham) NEC and featuring the two biggest draws in the then middleweight division. It was the perfect clash of styles to make for a fascinating fight, both gave everything they had in a war of attrition, the like of which we have not seen since. Although Eubank emerged victorious, both fighters ended with tremendous credit, and went on to achieve great things and both confirmed their greatness in the toughest sporting arena the world has seen.”
Throughout the illustrious history of boxing, certain fighters have been bound together by giving us contests that have helped rubber stamp their legacy on the sport. Joe Louis v Max Schmelling, Muhammad Ali v Joe Frasier right through to Marvin Hagler v Thomas Hearns as well as so many, many more. One night in Birmingham twenty years ago today (18 Nov) Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank went to war to not only win a world title but to start off a rivalry never to be forgotten or seen again in British boxing.
“Prior to Nigel agreeing to fight Eubank, he was going to be fighting Sugar Ray Leonard in a $5 million dollar deal. But Nigel wanted to fight Eubank. He disliked him so much and I cannot parallel the intensity and hatred he had for him. He kept telling me to get Eubank for him” recalled Benn’s former manager/promoter Ambrose Mendy.

Damn I didn't realize it was 20 years ago, 1 day after my birthday would of been just 6, all I really remember was wanting the guy in Black to win then was gutted when he didn't, It was The Fight that first got me into boxing.
