Simpson isn't fighting on this bill he's fighting on the Burns undercard for a Featherweight title. Buckland canes Simpson if they met. I like Simmo but Buckland got to much for Simpson IMHO.
Shaun Brown ‏@shaun_brown 1h John Simpson also told me he thinks he'll be going back down to featherweight and his Sep 7 bout will be for a title but unsure what one. Expand Reply Retweet Favorite More
I know they have Jake but he's looking to go back down to Featherweight think maybe Choi fight let him know he's not big enough for the weight?. Another fight that shouldn't of been announced.
livefight . com Gary Buckland vs John Simpson already in jeopardy With the news today that Ricky Hatton and Frank Maloney will follow Barry McGuigan into having television deals with Boxnation there was also the announcement of a fascinating undercard fight scheduled for Aug 17 that already might be in trouble. On the same night that Nathan Cleverly defends his WBO light heavyweight title against the heavy hitting Sergey Kovalev in Cardiff, the British super featherweight title was due to be on the line with champion Gary Buckland defending his strap against John Simpson after Hatton Promotions won the purse bids for the rights to stage the contest. Buckland has been without a fight since comprehensively stopping Stephen Foster Jr. last November. The Welshman was then due to face David Saucedo on the Sergio Martinez-Martin Murray undercard in Argentina in April but the fight was cancelled after fans destroyed the ring after the main event had finished. Livefight contacted Simpson to clarify if he would be fighting on the Cardiff bill or on the Matchroom Boxing show in Glasgow on Sep 7 headlined by former Frank ****** fighter, Ricky Burns who will be making the fourth defence of his WBO lightweight title against Raymundo Beltran. Simpson confirmed he would be fighting on the September date and after being asked if he knew what was going he said: “I honestly don’t know. I’m going back down to featherweight anyway I think. I’ve been told my next fight will be for a title but I’ve idea what one though!” Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn added: “We’re not John’s promoter but we’ll make an announcement on the full undercard [for Sep 7] and John Simpson’s future in the next few days.” Livefight were unable to obtain a response from Hatton Promotions.
I think the Choi fight answered a few weight questions for John. Don't be too surprised if he fights for a vacated Commonwealth strap.
