Hopefully your right mate Simpson said that's the first time he's ever been hurt in a boxing ring I read:bbb
It's only four pounds, if he isn't killing himself already then I'm sure with the right support around him he can make 122 fairly comfortably. I hope they give him a couple of fights so he can acclimatise to the new weight, he has earned a few given fights after years of taking on the toughest fighters the domestic Featherweight division has to offer. He could be a very interesting addition at Super Bantamweight, if he can make the weight comfortably a fight against either Scott Quigg or Carl Frampton could be very interesting and could tell us a lot about either.
He's a right tough nut ain't he? I was matched with John when we were both kids.... Tell him he was lucky when you see him :nut
Yep mate Dunky I think it is .He was supposed to train at the gym I joined though mate in PortGlasgow when he was kind of we one of the trainers said .My great uncle founded it yrs ago in PortGlasgow . He died though in 95 . http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=272193&cat=boxer
The drop down to super-bantam was discussed after the second Smith fight, so I'm glad he's giving it a shot rather than hanging them up. Jazzy Jeff's right - I think a lot of it is confidence. I'd get him a few fights at the weight against decent operators quickly, rather than just throwing in in against Casey or any of the top domestic dogs. Let him get a few fights to see how comfortable he is at the weight, against decent opponents. If he's comfortable, move him up for a harder test before looking for a Britsh or Commonwealth eliminator or title fight.
It's a 12 rounder, possible inter-continental strap on the line i hear also. Just hope John can do the business here and finish his career on a high
If it was sensational you need to tell us more Jeff, come on man! Btw, pretty sure it was Z-Man said he was family of Johns.
I was on the fence about getting a ticket for Burns' next fight, but Simpson being on the undercard would probably seal the deal for me tbh. Fun fighter, and someone I really root for.
trouble for wee simmy is, fighters tend to have a quicker 'lifespan' at the smaller weights, & Simmy just didnt look like the simmy of old against Selby. Cutting weight as he gets older? The argument is that simmy should always have been a super-bantam in the first place, I just worry the move has been made too late now. Its a 50/50 gamble IMO, its either going to result in spectacular success or spectacular failure IMO, no inbetween. Of course I will be cheering him on in the Kelvin Hall, cos hes one of my faves! However, being a realist I worry that dragging down an ageing smaller weight fighter down a division could have an adverse affect... So brit ESB'ers, can anyone tell me of any recent(ish) fighters who have dropped down a weight as they have gotten older & been successful? Honest question. Everone expected an ageing Takaloo to be a success when he dropped a division due to his power, but it never happened. Just an example off the top of my head.
