Martin Lindsay is set to defend his British featherweight title later this year, providing he comes through an eight-rounder on Saturday night.

Belfast-based Lindsay has been struggling to find a credible opponent since his one-sided victory over Jamie Arthur in March, taking his record to an impressive 16-0.

He takes on Belarusian journeyman Yauheni Kruhlik on the Steve Molitor-Jason Booth undercard at Rainton Meadows Arena on Saturday night, only his fourth fight in two years.

However, there will be no unification with Commonwealth champion Stephen Smith in the near-term after the youngster picked up an injury in his recent victory over John Simpson.
"Stephen Smith broke his hand but we will be announcing a British title fight very soon," Lindsay's promoter Frank Maloney told skysports.com "Then we'll be looking at a European title.

"Martin has to get the idea that he's going to have to stay busy, which we are trying to do, and it took a bit of persuading to get him to fight on this undercard.

"He wants to fight in Belfast and I understand that, but if you're not in a title fight you can't go to Belfast.

"If you go through the British ratings, there is no-one that's any good. The board turned down four fighters that we put in for British title fights."

    Jeffries back

Meanwhile, former Olympic bronze medallist Tony Jeffries returns to action against Carl Wild on the Molitor-Booth undercard.

Jeffries was fortunate to come away with a draw in his last fight against the awkward Michael Benbula, when he fought with an injured arm and also suffered a cut during the eight-rounder.

'Jaffa' will be looking to put that performance behind him and one man who has been impressed is Canadian amateur Colin Fish, a training partner of Molitor who sparred with Jeffries last week.

"He's a good boxer, straight punches, good skills, good jab - I'm impressed," said Fish. "He definitely showed why he won an Olympic medal.

"He's training hard, he definitely wants to show everyone that wasn't him back there.

"We sparred five rounds, he's pretty strong and tall too. Straight punches are his strength, I wouldn't say there were too many weaknesses.

"He probably knows he can't mess around now. Every fight's a fight, so if he wants to keep that record going he's got to do a good job."

Still not watched the Sky broadcast, just cant.

Truly hope John gets the shot, canna think of any other fighter on the domestic scene thats had bad decisions etc etc........and NO this is by no means taking away from Smith.....i had him winning on the night (JS) but as i says i aint watched the rerun.

Smith, fair play to ya, you post well on here and i hope ya injury gets fixed up soon.

Anyways, if ever a fighter needed a break........its Simpson.

Hope this happens.....he will win too.

Haha! There will be no "ESB Irish knees knocking together" at the thought of this fight. It was meant to happen a few times before and Simpson has gone back since then and Lindsay is still an unknown quantity with more improvement to come. If Maloney hadn't messed around; Lindsay would be EBU champ now or have a title eliminator sorted. Lindsay would beat Simpson by a wide UD

Styles make fights I think man .Smith Appelbly very close decision .Only reason I think Lindsay stopped Appelby was because in-experience and he went into the lions den to soon .That suits Simpson better man and he's boxed double the rounds Lindsay so no chance I see a wide ud .Close if anything I think man .I think Simpson would adapt to Lindsays style but just has to up his workrate a we bit man incase another close call on the cards .

Bulls--t mate Simpson ain't an easy fight for Lindsay no chance .Hardest fight to date for Lindsay if this fight gets made ..Simpson fights better going into the lions den .Appelby in-experienced man I would give him the benefit of the doubt if it was on his home soil and Mattews man not been the same since the Choi Tseveenpurev ko. That was a brutal beating .I'm defintley going with styles make fights and Simpson would be Lindsay's hardest fight to date :bbb

Now now Billy... We had this conversation before. Too often people's judgement is blinded by bias/loyalty to their fellow countryman. I remember one of you Jocks had a bet that he would leave ESB if Lindsay beat Appleby... That was crazy.

It wasnt a row Billy, don't worry! Merely a difference of a opinion of who would win between Lindsay and Simpson. Well done with Ricky by the way. Last time we talked you were getting ready to travel out with Ricky, so it could have been Jan/Feb time?
