Since the calendar turned to 2011, Ioka is 7-0 with 5 KO's. My claim is that since then, Ioka has a better resume, clearly in most of these cases, than the higher profile fighters I am about to list. First, Ioka's resume: W TKO5 Oleydong Sithsamerchai (35-0-1) - WBC minimumweight W UD12 Juan Hernandez (18-1) - WBC defense W TKO1 Yodngoen Chalermchai (8-0) - WBC defense W UD12 Akira Yaegashi (15-2) - WBC/WBA unification W TKO6 Jose Alfredo Rodriguez (28-1) - vacant WBA light flyweight W KO9 Wisanu Kokietgym (43-8-2) - WBA defense W KO7 Kwanthai Sithmorseng (43-1-1) - WBA defense The fighters Ioka has a superior resume to since 2011 began: Takashi Uchiyama, 4-0-1 w/ 4 KO's Wins over Takashi Miura, Jorge Solis, Bryan Vasquez, and Jaider Parra. Tech Draw in 3 vs. Michael Farenas between them. Vitali Klitschko, 4-0 w/ 3 KO's Wins over Odlanier Solis, Tomasz Adamek, Dereck Chisora, and Manuel Charr. Gennady Golovkin, 7-0 w/ 7 KO's Wins over Kassim Ouma, Lajuan Simon, Makoto Fuchigama, Grzegorz Proksa, Gabriel Rosado, Nobuhiro Ishida, and Matthew Macklin. Amir Khan, 4-2 w/ 2 KO's Wins over Paul McCloskey, Zab Judah, Carlos Molina, and Julio Diaz. Losses to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia. Kubrat Pulev, 8-0 w/ 4 KO's Wins over Yaroslav Zavarotnyi, Derric Rossy, Maksym Pedyura, Travis Walker, Michael Sprott, Alexander Dimitrenko, Alexander Ustinov, and Tony Thompson. Sergei Kovalev, 10-0-1 w/ 10 KO's Wins, starting recent and moving backward, over Nathan Cleverly, Cornelius White, Gabriel Campillo, Lionell Thompson, Darnell Boone, Roman Simakov, Douglas Okola, Terrance Woods, Julius Fogle, and William Johnson. Tech Draw in 2 vs. Grover Young in there. Manny Pacquiao, 2-2 Wins over Shane Mosley and Juan Manuel Marquez III. Losses to Tim Bradley and Marquez IV. Miguel Cotto, 2-2 w/ 2 KO's Wins over Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito II. Losses to Floyd Mayweather and Austin Trout. Roman Gonzalez, 9-0 w/ 7 KO's Wins over Manuel Vargas, Omar Salado, Omar Soto, Manuel Jimenez, Ramon Garcia, Stiven Monterrosa, Juan Francisco Estrada, Ronald Barrera, and Francisico Rodriguez Jr.
Points of disagreement: * Given the fact that Ioka's very best victory (over Yaegashi) was disputed by many, I think I'd say Gonzalez probably has the slight edge, given his win over Estrada. * Pac and Cotto probably get the edge over Ioka in terms of quality of opposition. Pac getting KTFO is offset a bit by virtue of being on the end of a debatable nod against Bradley. And I thought Cotto's loss to Trout was closer than the official scorecards made it seem. Uncertain: *Uchiyama's win over Miura looks better and better. Not completely certain if you can give Ioka a clear edge over Uchi, in spite of having better numbers. 50/50, imo. *Chisora's form has been decent as of late, and Ademeck hasn't officially lost since VK, so I'm a little bit hesitant to give Ioka the nod here. But I can see where you're coming from. Another 50/50 call. Points of agreement: *Pretty much everyone else, imo. Kovalev being the only one I would hesitate to include in this section.
Ioka's best win is Oleydong. People aren't very familiar but Sithsamerchai was undefeated with a who's who at minimumweight. He had an amazing run of opposition en route to a lengthy defense which was cut short by a body shot. The win over Sithsamerchai honestly is better than almost every single victory listed in this thread, 1 on 1 comparing. Look him up. It's one of the better wins in recent mimimumweight history, really. Also in regards to the scoring of Ioka/Yaegashi, ESB is the only place where I found (and I looked) people citing a Yaegashi victory on their cards. I scored it a draw but I'll recognize the mass media's acceptance of an Ioka win. Edit: His win this month was over a former one time once beaten titlist in Kwanthai. Juan Hernandez is a solid ass win in a tough fight too. I'm telling you, Ioka's resume is quality and quantity. He's a former unified and former 2 weight titlist. His finishing ability is damn good. He has great skills.
Sithsamerchai was a solid champ, but IIRC, was looking a bit vulnerable in his last couple of defenses. Still a very good win for Ioka, who does indeed look to be the goods at this stage of his career. Would love to see a rematch btx Yaegashi and Kazuto, if that could be made.
Until Rigondeaux beat Donaire, Ioka had a better resume than Rigo for a fighter with so few fights. Keep your eye on upcoming sensation Naoya Inoue too (4-0), he's touted as the new Ioka and beat Ryoichi Taguchi for the Japense Jr Flywelt belt last month. Plus even after 4 fights he's already ranked by most notable ranking committee's. I'd say on your list it's a toss up between him and Roman Gonzalez (the Estrada win is looking great in hindsight), but if you take into account the lack of pro experience I would say BETTER- maybe, MORE IMPRESSIVE- yes.
If you take away the benefit of hindsight though I think it's undoubtedly more impressive than Gonzalez' and Uchiyama, had Estrada and Miura retired after those particular fights, they wouldn't have been that notable
Yeah but if you're going to give Estrada and Miura so much props in hindsight than the W over Yaegashi, which was much better at the time it happened, also gets better with his moving up and claiming lineage at Flyweight.
Though Rigo's got the single best win, I do think Iota's got the deeper resume. Either way one wants to argue it, both are fantastic talents. Ioka really is a P4P level fighter right now and should be rated as such, although we probably won't see it until the Western boxing media has an incentive to rate him that high or it's the end of his career as a sort of lifetime achievement award, like we did for Pong.
:good Good point. I love to see a 4 man mini tourney at Flyweight rematches of Yaegashi and Ioka vs the winner of Gonzalez v Estrada 2 (first fights of both was awesome).
This is true. I wouldn't say Ioka is quite top 10 yet but he's more deserving of consideration than Broner anyway. Gonzalez is someone who doesn't get on anywhere near as many pound for pound lists as he deserves either. Rankings committees in the western world are racist against small people. :bart
