Since Cotto lost, is Paul Williams the number 1 WW?

    Why? It's all circular.

Margarito beat Cotto, who beat Quintana, who beat Williams, who beat Margarito.

I think either Margo or Williams has a pretty good argument right now, and you can "have a ****ing clue" and put either one up top.

When you can't do it solely based on who beat who, you have to look at the H2H. Most people think Margo could beat WIlliams in a rematch. I still don't think Williams could beat Cotto - he doesn't have the power to break down Cotto the way Margo did. Quintana loses to all three on a good day.

how can you rank Margarito higher than Paul Williams right now. I have no problem with Margarito and Williams being 1a and 1b, but Margito is not #1 WW right now, no way can he be rated higher than the man who beat him head to head.

PW is still in the picture, he going to need to rematch PW to keep that #1 rank

Margarito is ranked 1a and Williams is 1b

They need to fight to determine the man in the division.

I think that the number one position at welterweight should be left vacant until we have a winner in the Williams - Margarito rematch.

To me Margarito and Paul Williams should duke it out to determine who is #1

Williams has lost since fighting Margarito, Margarito has won every fight since then and beat an opponent much better than the one Williams lost to and subsequently KTFO

He holds a head to head win but a lot has happened since then. When you lose a match you don't stay ahead of everyone you've beaten, it doesn't work that way and never has

And the Margarito-Williams fight was very close, it wasn't a "domination" like you claimed it was. Williams dominated the first half of the fight but Margarito came on strong in the second half and hurt Williams repeatedly. I can see if that fight was a 120-108 shutout, but it was close, and not nearly dominant enough to remain ranked ahead of Margarito despite losing to a solid but unspectacular opponent since then

Anyway it doesn't really matter because in a perfect world there would be a rematch but I'd be surprised if Williams fight at WW again

Margarito only has had one fight in the same time span Paul had two. Why hate on Paul for avenging his loss, especially when you look at how he did it. As for the Margarito fight, Paul dominated Margarito on points, in my eyes it was not a close points fight, also Paul finished strongly.

How am I "hating" on Williams for avenging his loss? The point is that he lost to an unspectacular opponent and avenging the loss does a lot but it doesn't erase the loss completely.

Since losing to Williams, Margarito has actually fought 3 times, including the destruction of Cintron for the IBF title and then beating Cotto into submission for the WBA title

In the same span, Williams went 1-1 against Quintana, someone Cotto dismantled with ease

So, let's see, Margarito is 3-0 with two extremely impressive victories against top 5 weltwerweight titlists, while Williams is 1-1 with a lifeless performance against a solid but physically limited top 10-type contender type that he had no business losing to, and then a 1 round destruction in the rematch

Nobody considered Williams the man or the #1 weltwerweight after he beat Margarito. If he hadn't lost since beating Margarito then yeah he would have the claim to the #1 spot. But you can't just conveniently overlook the fact that since beating Margarito, Williams lost against someone he never should have lost to, while Margarito has collected 2 more belts and convincingly beat the person that was the "consensus" #1 in the division

I'm not sure how you do your rankings, but for most people, you don't inherit the #1 spot without doing anything

I would say Quintana is entitled to a third fight

Williams lost a a very slick boxer, who was a former division champ, what is the shame in that. Quintana only had one loss before fighting Paul and that was to Cotto, what is there to be ashamed about that loss.

Since fighting Williams, Margarito fought ****ing Golden Johnson (not a great WW), Kermit Cintron (man went life and death with ****ing Jesse Feliciano), then he just fought Cotto. I don't see what is so great about who he has been fighting compared to QUintana.

As for Williams, I never said he was number 1 after he beat Margarito, I don't think anyone has. He definitely was one of the top WW titlest and in the upper crust of the division. I don't think Margarito was ranked over him even after the Quintana loss, so with the Cotto loss, I can see Cotto falling behind him and Margarito and Margarito jumping up. I think depending on your personal rankings this could lead to Paul Williams becoming 1 WW (not champ but #1).

Marg didn't beat the champ, he beat the number 1 contendor... The champ has just retired, leaving that spot vacant.
