Its a shame 3G has to jump to SMW prematurely because that coward champ Sergio is fighting a shot Welterweight and won't give him a shot. That said, I like this fight and 3G should take it if the JCC Jr fight falls through.
I expect to see Ward move straight up to LHW and jump right into the LHW inification mix. That's the hottest ticket right now and he can become the unified undisputed LHW champion by 2015.
GGG should do what Martinez did when no one at 154 wanted to fight him, moved to 160 and kick Kelly Pavliks ass or Do what Adonis Stevens at 168 when no wanted to fight him, move to 175 and kicked Chad Dawson ass. The winner of Cotto and Martinez is going to cash out either against Mayweather or Canelo. GGG should move to 168 and face real challenges and not sit around waiting for old man Martinez.
Because Ward is too much risk for little attention especially as GG's first fight at Super Middleweight.
Ward probably ain't fighting anytime soon due to his promotional issues, but I think it'd be premature for Golovkin to take his first SMW fight against the best 168 fighter on the planet. Jr was (is) weak enough in his boxing skills for Golovkin to be reasonably confident in his ability to win despite the huge size difference. I just don't know yet where Golovkins ceiling is but you don't go from a best fight of Macklin to fight Ward. In fact Golovkins team wern't actually intending to go up yet anyway, but the Jr fight was too good to pass up.
Not true, because Ward is not a PPV guy. There were two reasons GGG wanted JR - one being they had wanted that fight since Jr was a 160lb titleholder, and of course the main reason being he is a PPV guy. You become a PPV guy by looking good in a PPV fight. A good PPV vs Jr (both in buys and the fight itself) would have enabled K2 to make a competitive offer to Martinez, who is in cash-out phase of his career. Fighting Ward, since its not a PPV fight basically has no upside. If they lose, well its a loss. But even if GGG won the fight it would not improve the finances or position much. If he has had a hard time getting opponents within the allotted purse envelope thus far, imagine how difficult it would be if he actually pulled an upset and beat Ward? Much higher risk, but not much higher reward. Kind of the same problem Ward has been faced with. Ward's boxing abilities outstrip is financial draw. Now, I am not saying GGG would win - but he would be as live an underdog as Ward has faced in a long time, and you have to consider the relative position if an upset occurred. That all being said, I would buy the fight in a second if they did make a GGG/Ward PPV fight. But I dont see Goosen, giving the still ongoing Federal Lawsuit being willing to front purse guarantees and K2 does not have the money to float a Ward-sized purse PPV guarantee - because if they did they would have already offered it to Martinez. To get GGG to fight at 168, it basically has to be a PPV fight. So unless Goosen and Ward make peace to the degree where Goosen wants to make a fight of that magnitude for Ward (if he even can, I wonder if Goosen can operate on that level and wonder if thats a big reason Ward wants out) it wont happen. I would be impressed with both camps if they made the fight happen though.
Perhaps once Ward gets back to the ring, if he does, and boosts himself up to where the fight is PPV viable. As far as it being GGG's next fight... no one has any idea when or if Ward will return to the ring. Why would a boxer sit around waiting on an opponent that may never materialize? Most of us made fun of Khan for sitting around dormant waiting on a Mayweather fight that never came, why would we recommend this same course of action for GGG?? :think
