Let Povetkin step down in weight and beat someone for the new bridgerweight championship. Whyte can beat somebody to reclaim the #1 WBC contender heavy spot. It would be good for Povetkin, so he can get a legit (well, sort of a guess) title, and it would be fair to Whyte, who was the #1 contender for three years. Povetkin is not beating Fury, and, even if he wanted the chance, he won't get it until the two fights with Joshua play out. At 41, he can't put his career on hold that long. And, if he wanted to step back up to take a last crack later on, he would have even more credibility in doing so as a champ. Povetkin-Whyte II is a pointless, garbage fight. Let them both move on to something better.
If this division is anything like the cruiserweight or junior heavyweight division (since the orgs couldn't agree on a name back then) when it launched, the top heavyweights probably won't be involved ... at least for a while. That's why you had guys like Mate Parlov fighting for the cruiserweight belt back then. The more likely candidates will be cruisers moving up, like Gassiev, Huck, Dorticos ... and the cruiserweight class will get peeled off before the heavyweight class does. Because the guys fighting at heavyweight who are highly rated are fighting there because they want to be heavyweight champ, not Bridgerweight champ, or whatever it's called. That's why I said in another thread it'll be interesting to see what the first ratings look like. If the WBC removes guys from the cruiserweight and heavyweight rankings and put them in the new class, the heavys may just ignore the ratings or start competing for other belts with orgs that don't recognize the division. And if none of the heavyweights want to fight for the belt, the champ of the new division will just be blown up former cruisers for a few years. I'd be stunned if Povetkin gave up the interim belt on his own. But who the hell knows. Just more nonsense.
