it is a legit title. It has been for awhile. The problem is not the WBO it is all the titles. But they will never fix that problem.

IMO it will never stop, because if the fighters are willing to pay the sanctioning fees and the networks call all 4 belts world titles the fans are not smart enough to see through it, what can stop this madness. What makes it worse is that in order to unify at a weight class they make a fighter jump through hoops. Creates a lot of confusion to everyone.

Nothing wrong with the WBO organization IMO but literally that 147 belt has zero meaning, Cotto picked it up after fighting that British guy after Paul vacated it because he couldn't find a fight...but I guess the belt only means as much as the man holding it...in that case the WBO is as legit as any...definitely more legit than the current WW WBC

The WBO certaintly doesn't have the big fight history of the WBC or the IBF

Don't forget the IBO, WBF, WBU, IBC, IBU, IBA, WBE and WAA belts.

Audley Harrison's trophy cabinet, in other words.

To be honest I think there are 4, perhaps 5 legit titles at the moment, WBC, IBF, WBA, WBO ... IBO + RING.

To be honest these belts are not really relevent these days, the best fighters will win several of them anyway. The best fighter in each division owning perhaps 2 or more of these titles.

This is a major reason for boxing being sidelined in the mainstream these days. One world champ per weight class please. Its nothing to do with the WBO but boxing as a whole needs to get its house in order.

To answer the question, I think it gained prominence when the Klitschko's had it in early 2000's. With Calzaghe as a holder at the time, it seemed to start to mean something. Prior to that the HW belt, anyway, meant nothing.

Do they suck? They all suck. Go to fight.news.com and check the rankings - every single organization makes absolutely no sense. That the IBO is actually gaining some recognition is just more nonsense. At least they don't seem to be in it for the money, but the IBO is not the solution to this problem.

Cool, lets do that. WBC and IBF it is then.

Who'd have thought that Andre Berto and Isaac Hlatshwayo were the legitimate champions at welterweight? What are the chances of them meeting to create an undisputed champion?

The WBO was referred to by Froch as "Warren's Boxing Organisation" on the Steve Bunce show. He has a point.
