Since when does the referee hold a fighter up and carry him to his corner?

It was crazy. Also I didn't get a chance to count yet, but before the end of the 3rd, watch the counter. It turned 10 and it seemed like the bell was rung at least 5 seconds early.
They did everything they could to get Clev back in the fight, but really all the ref/ hometown cooking did was put a bigger beating on Cleverly. Ref HAD to stop it when he did or Clev would have got plenty taken off his career.

Like I said before, I am just glad that Kovalev didn't get disqualified for knocking Cleverly out.

that type of stuff only goes on in the UK like the referee that stopped a Hatton fight for him to tie his shoelaces that weren't untied to save him from getting KOed :rofl:patsch

    It is embarrassing.

In the "Cleverly took a knee strike to the head" thread. About 2min 30sec in. It's been exaggerated on this forum.

As a Brit I do believe lately in some fights referee's are favouring the home fighter of the big promotors even between two Brits. This is against the grain because forever the UK was known to be a place where a foreign fighter would get a fair deal.
But we'll not concede any moral high ground to the Yanks.
America was the home of the fixed fight for decades with the Mob and later Don King calling the shots. We'll take no lectures from the Colonists on this.

Maybe Terry should have disqualified Kov when Kov facking landed a full blooded punch on Clev when he was down? That would have been fair enough eh?

Interesting how Brits never lose by brit stoppages with UK refs when they fight outsiders. Then it's help the lad along, he seemed to have slipped on a banana peel.

Britain is famous for such illegal tactics. I found it weird for such a great country should keep high standards in any area. I have no explanation for this tradition in British boxing.

Doncha think he woulda done if it was remotely justified? I know the commentator got a bit excited, but O'Conner was looking right at the action. Watch yourself a replay - Clev goes real low to avoid the latest combo, the first one hits him on the side of the head causing him to start to fall to his knees and Kovs second punch kinda of grazes over the top of Clevs head as he goes down onto his hands.

I think the ref just noticed the round was over and thought Cleverly was just saved by the bell, therefore invalidating his initial decision to wave it off. I think he did the right thing: He was wrong to wave it off on the bell, so he corrected himself.

no, he was clearly waving before the bell

and he clearly carried him to the corner.
