Since when does the referee hold a fighter up and carry him to his corner?

I believe it was Brewster or Williams that was in this fight where he wacked this dude so bad in the middle of a round where they had to stop the round to give it a rest . I've never seen a round where it was on 1:30 before that :patsch. And there's this other one where he didn't beat the count and the ref had to stop it at 9 to help him to his corner.

If I was getting a kicking like that from a world class puncher, the last thing I would want is the ref carrying me back to the corner for my dad to send me back out. It was kind of Macabre.

With hindsight it wasn't the best choice of opponent. Kovalev being so powerful and in control made it a complete mismatch, more so than I expected.

Indeed. I don't think I've ever seen a fight being waved off, then not because the bell rings. Then helping him to his corner? It shows a mindset, if nothing else. Anyone who doesn't see anything wrong with it is probably of the same mindset.

whether its the mindset of 'lets turn local boy joe calzaghe's split points decision against a bum into a TKO for him, boys' or the mindset of 'well I don't want to be seen not helping our darling champion or else I might get my car windows kicked in on the way home for the next 10 years, boyo', I'm not sure.

He should never have waved with 2 seconds on the clock. He got the signal for the last 10 seconds. The waving off was clearly in error unless Cleverly was on the floor helpless, unable to get up. Which he wasn't.

Nah, he was jumping in to save the kid from more punishment, as he is supposed to. There was still time enough for Kovalev to land several more shots. His instincts were right. He should have followed them. Cleverly was DONE. 60 seconds wouldn't be enough for him to recover from the abuse, and it wasn't.

The ref probably felt bad as he actually tripped Wlad up.

Yeah, the ref tackled Wlad and gave him a concussion ... should be changed to a NC imo.
