How long has Cotto been Mayweathers biggest fight, is it since:

2005 - nearly being KO'd by Corley then Torres while defending his WBC belt, while Judah went undisputed at Welter and Hatton became the 140 king beating Tyszu and IBF & WBA champ at 140?

2006 - beating the legendary Branco, Malignaggi and winning Hatton's vacated WBA belt? Meanwhile Baldomir becomes undisputed Welter champ and Hatton is staying undefeated

March 2007 - beating Ukral - was this the win that bumped him above unbeaten Hatton who dethroned Tyszu? Above Delahoya?

June 2007 beating Judah - good win against a ring rusty Judah but fouled, was this the win that bumped him above unbeaten Hatton who dethroned Tyszu? Above Delahoya?

November 2007 beating Mosley - VERY disputed win, many had Mosley winning. This is the first time Cotto could be on par with unbeaten Hatton who dethroned Tyszu, and Delahoya?

So in answer to the question, Cotto has only been the number 1 contender to Floyd since December when Floyd beat Hatton, thats 5-6 months. Even then this is arguable, especially as Delahoya took Floyd to an SD and some had Mosley beating Cotto

It's lately been the BEST fight out there.

Just not the biggest ($$$), that remains the Golden Fishnet.

Mayweather fighting anyone of Hatton/Cotto/Mosley in December 2007 was alright with me.

Yea, but the thing about every single one of the fights you listed, Cotto won each and every one of them. Now, Cotto is fighting another Top 5 Welterweight and if he does go on to beat him, then why won't he deserve a shot at Floyd?

since mayweather is the recoginzed champ at WW and other than Judah has fought no one at WW. Everyone with eyes can tell hatton isn't a top ten welter. ODH hasnt been a real WW much less a threat since about 01', baldo was a no name journey man who didnt belong in the ring with mayweather much less top ten fighters.

Bu, bu, but no....fighters and promoters never do that.

Holyfield never turned down a unification bout against Lewis in late 1997, wanting more money, only to receive $20 million in March 1999.

Leonard never made Hearns wait, Dundee never told him to let it build, Leonard never said anythling like "Yeah I'm afraid, afraid I'm not gonna get paid enough", or said "we'll fight Hearns when he reaches the stature of a Roberto Duran".

Mayweather and Hatton never waited to help build their matchup with Hatton's American exposure....Ray Hatton didn't admit later on that they were in negotiations for 2 years.

This is totally new, waiting for big matchups never happened in the past.

Mosley is Mosley though, who ever came out of that contest deserved the fight with Mayweather, and Cotto is improving dramatically plus he is cleaning out the division which no other fighter is doing at present.

If he beats Margarito clearly there is no place for Mayweather to go without damaging his reputation. THe longer Mayweather takes his time over the fight the increase of chance Cotto has of taking a win.

Will be one of boxing's finest fights I'd think.

Snce De La Hoya...lets not hate on Cotto. The man has fought many great fighters and proved himself. I'm not a huge fan but you have to respect him. The Matweather / DLH winner needs to face the Cotto / Margarito winner. That will confirm the best at 147...nothing else will.

If Cotto wins his next fight than that has Cotto defeating Margarito Mosley Judah Quintana Gomez Urkal

Williams and Cintron/Clottey and Collazo were beaten by Quintana Margarito and Mosley respectively who were in turn beaten by ****ing Miguel Angel Cotto.

Who has Floyd Mayweather beaten at 147lbs? Hatton and Baldomir and Judah. Neither are on this list with the exception of Judah. If you're going to give Cotto **** for fighting a skill-less Gomez and urkal then why shouldn't we give Mayweather **** for fighting skill-less Baldomir if thats where you're going with that? I don't give a **** about Baldomir having the belts, thats the only significant **** Floyd has done at 147lbs and its laughable to say the least.

I respect Floyd he has accomplished a lot in his career OVERALL.

    But as far as his little stint at 147lbs - HE HAS DONE N O T H I N G

With that said, as far as 147lbs is concerned Cotto IS the biggest fight that he has to take if he wants to stick around as "champion" at 147lbs.

If you want to make an argument for Cotto being the biggest fight of his career than Maybe you should compare the quality of an opponent that Cotto is incomparison to to the quality of opponents that Mayweather has faced.

Because you can't name 1 opponent on Mayweathers resume that is superior to Cotto. And if you do I'd like to hear it because I'm looking for a good laugh!
