Seen the fight several times and even Clay admitted in later years that he was in trouble. As for the "crap about the ref going backstage to look for gloves" it's just that...crap..Henry was a man of his time and a dam site better than those serial embarrassments Bugner or Bodell ...the fact remains Clay spouted crap for years it was a slip and Dundee was desperate....have a look at the galzed eyes in the video. O/T On the subject of crap--Ali / Clay was in the words of Larry Holmes the most over rated heavyweight ever....he did him a favour in that farcical fight ( that should never have been ) by not decking him and later regretting it.Tyson,Lewis,Holmes,Holyfield & Foreman (who) beat himself against the Lip,they were all better Heavywieghts and it was crap referring over the years that allowed Ail to get away with the holding from the 1st bell.
Even when Cooper commented on whether Hatton should retire he brought up how Hatton hit the canvas hard whereas Clay was brought down gently by the ropes against Cooper, & of course had the ropes not been there Clay "would've been the same" atsch. Patterson anihilating Cooper is a great ko btw.
I have enormous respect for Sir Henry. He has always been an idol of mine.Haye should respectfully listen to what the legend has to say. BTW could some nice person, please upload Cooper's fights against Patterson or Johansson?
See what I mean about Henry Coopers ability to turn a complete and utter lie into the truth? Henry Cooper is the biggest ***** in the world for continuing that lie.
Why, he said only said Dundee cheated. He did. The smelling salts were illegal and the fact that he sought extra time makes him a cheat of sorts (on that night anyway). The lie about the duration has gone on too long of course. It's between 8-10 seconds.
I love the charmingly quaint notion that it's what you mean in British popular opinion that gets you a knighthood. That's so sweet.
Well it got you a Knighthood at the time Damond D and was definitely a " quintessentially British" thing, though these days a donation to Spivs who have run the country into the ground will get you a gong.. back to the topic..I think Haye will regret this stunt and pay dearly for it...
Well, honours are supposed to be awarded for service to the United Kingdom. Is David Jason a great actor, who has won 10 consecutive Oscars and broke box office records worldwide? No, no one knows who he is outside of this Island, but he's been an institution here for 30 years, so he gets one. I'd argue a guy who was a B level fighter and had the whole country following his every fight did more to serve the UK than a guy who only claimed British citezenship in a cynical attempt to get richer. If boxing is considered something worth getting awards for, I don't see how they're any different to any other guy earning a living to be honest, not like soldiers or whatever, But I'd say Lewis has done well enough to get a CBE. Of course what do I know? you've got thousands of posts on an internet forum about boxing, you are the supreme enlightened, you know better than me.
A lot of truth in the above... Heavyweights were in the 13-14st weight back then.....the heavyweights of the 70's was where it was at for my money...........that was one hell of an era :yep:yep:yep
Maybe being a bit controversial here but I'm struggling to see how anyone can claim that Cooper achieved things that Haye can over dream of. What would this be exactly? Haye was the undisputed cruiserweight champ and will next month challenge for two versions of the world heavyweight crown. Cooper unsuccessfully challenged for the heavyweight crown. By my rationale this means Haye has achieved more already, no matter what happens next month. I will happily accept that Cooper fought a much higher level of opponent and gave a good account of himself but he didn't win so how can he be rated above Haye?
