Yeah, that was less objectionable than a couple of their other mid-90's choices (Holyfield-Tyson I in '96 being the prime offender), but still would have been nice to see fights like that and Lee-Onizuka (my choice for FOTY in '94) get their due.

True, but let's be fair. These are American journalists voting so how are they even going to see international fights before youtube? They might catch something on satellite, or have an agreement with another fan in a foreign country to send tapes in the mail but it wasn't like it is now where if it's on film the whole world can see it.

Well, the internet wasn't in 1997 what it has become, that's for sure - and there definitely wasn't YouTube.

Still, if you are nominally a boxing journalist you should go to whatever lengths it takes covering the sport, and should take greater care before offhandedly dubbing something "this or that" of the year than merely ensuring you watched all the HBO/Showtime/TVKO events on the calendar.

If we "be fair" and use that logic...what's their excuse now for genrally ignoring stuff from the East?

For example I don't believe I saw Kosei Tanaka on a single Prospect of the Year contender list for last year (Steve Lillis did mention him and Ryo Matsumoto in a Boxing Monthly article I know Boxing Monthly's Mark Butcher has shown an interesting in Asian boxing so I have less complaints there), the BWAA doing their shortlist before Naoya Vs Narvaez was completely ****ed up and how Iwao Hakamada wasn't recognised for "courage" is simply shameful.

I'd give them a pass if they decided to show some sense of change but they haven't even bothered to look at things outside of America.

And if we "be fair" their job is to know about things in the sport so they should show a bit more interest in finding out what goes on beyond their own backyard!

True, but how many people are really that devoted or good at their jobs in any field? How many people have access to the time and resources to do top rate work? Of course, I do recall hearing that Nat Fleischer went to Germany to check out the boxing scene there. And I was just reading an article by A.J. Liebling where he mentions criss-crossing the Atlantic to see the best America and Europe had to offer; so it's not like nobody had any integrity or passion for their work.

So the knockdown was actually 'legitimate' but kind of chintzy.

It wasn't like Naz landed a game changer and had the vet in trouble or anything. In fact, Sirimongkol literally had laughed off a much flusher 1-2 on the chin from the youngster just moments earlier. It was mostly a matter of poor balance and old legs. He was hopping away from his opponent and didn't set his feet properly before dipping away from the next punch, so when it grazed him it just resulted in physics & gravity taking over.

Still, a sign he probably shouldn't pursue any world scene ambitions or swim in much deeper waters than his pool of WBO Asia Pacific contenders.

    Current rankings:

    1) Daniel Dawson (just knocked out by Tapia)
    2) King Davidson (hasn't fought in 16 monhts :huh)
    3) Dennis Hogan (taking on Tyrone Brunson next week)
    4) Sam Ah See
    5) Koji Numata
    6) Yuki Nonaka (about to defend Japanese title against Hosokawa)
    7) Takehiro Shimokawara (winless since 2013, 0-1-1 against Numata, stopped twice in a row)
    8.) Yosuke Kirima
    9) Stanyslav Skorokhod (participating in the Boxcino tourney semifinals on Friday)
    10) Taras Shelestyuk (Olympian, already establishing himself in the USA's green pastures and unlikely to fly east for a trinket)

(Nazareno was #12 entering their rematch yesterday)

So his likeliest options are See, Numata, or Kirima.

Firstly-Thought he looked awful the first few rounds then finally got going.

Secondly...hahahaha he'll not be fighting any of them, expect to just see a random guy thrown into the rankings from Indonesia a week before he fights them, it's typically how those regional titles are done.

Koji Numata shouldn't be ranked, he announced his retirement last year. Arnel Tinampay (who beat Kirima in Singapore) would be a very interesting opponent.
