    Alright Fellas

Just reading another thread where it seems some people view ''skill'' far differently to others.

As some of you know i do football coaching and what your taught as a coach in football is that technique is something unopposed that a player does such as shooting but when in a game or under pressure it's a skill because it's produced there and then rather then technique where players can pass in pairs 10 yards from each other with just refining technique. The technique translate to skill in football.

So was wondering what you consider to be Skill in Boxing? Is it good technique? (Punches, Defence, Footwork etc), Is it understanding of how to use ring? is it evading and countering shots? is it a combination of things? Are guys like Andy Lee...Skillful? or just technically refined fighters?

Even as a coach i always tell players and other coaches that to me Boxing is the more skilled sport out of the two and for me in the world (i know some will say MMA). Even though skill level in football is amazingly high Boxing for me is just on another level. When i see a fighter evading punches that could easily destroy him then to land with sheer ease it's just beautiful to watch. It's a sport of angles and inches.

For me a skilled fighter would be a Floyd Mayweather and a Fundamentally Sound fighter would be someone like a Pavlik who threw shots soundly technique wise but didn't have the qualities all defensively.

Fundamentals in boxing would relate to your Basics in Football.
Ie. Jab= Push Pass. Parry=Receiving Ball

    Shoulder Roll=Stepovers

So Pavlik would be your Basic but solid technical fighter and Mayweather obviously would be your Ronaldo in terms of skills and also technique.

    I hope you see what i mean....

    Your Views Appreciated :good

Skill to me is excelling offensively and defensively in all areas or positions you can face in a boxing ring. i.e. at any range. Or at least excelling in most areas and being competent in the others.

Yeah i'd go along with that. As you said in the other thread to me as well Lee's not skilled. He's a solid technical fighter but i never sat there and thought ''wow look at the skills of this guy''. Just a solid technical fighter and i don't think that's a bad thing. Just like football not every player can be a box of tricks.

Skill - someone smart who can make you do what they want you to do using feints and angles, or inches as you say. They might not have the best technique and some of the things they do might look slightly crude, (e.g hopkins or calzaghe) but they are a master of range and distance. Some fighters like Cotto are most technically correct than them but not as skilled.
