Donaire fought a guy who disrupted his rhythm continuously and was always one step ahead. Donaire has always had bad balance and this fight showed it.
I think Donaire always knew that Rigo was going to be very difficult, hence why he was hesitant to sign the fight, hence why he tried to convince himself that amateur achievements mean nothing, hence why he didn't want to watch video of a guy who is more skilled than him, hence why he tried to clown Rigo at the weighin. Donaire was never confident about this fight, he tried to tell himself 'How good can an 11 fight pro be?'. He didn't want to know about Rigo, he never wanted to confront his biggest fear and he paid the price. Donaire knows boxing, he knew deep down how good Rigo was but he never wanted to admit it to himself. "Why should I, a p4p guy be worrying about a novice pro?". To admit that Rigo was a real threat he had to put his ego in check. As we can see by Donaire's whinging and complaining he is all about ego, and he paid the price.

I even have a soft spot for Lederman. He's a NY guy whose been around the game awhile, and for what he has gone through recently but he's being doing this all the time as of late. It's as if every great fighter, or just any fighter that is losing is simply not punching enough. It's really as if boxing is that simple for him these days.

I think there's a lot of truth to this. Still a little strange, though. To brush a guy off when you haven't fought him is one thing, but to then just dismiss him after already signing to fight him because he's too big of a threat. It was clearly the biggest challenge of his career in the eyes of just about everyone. If Donaire was too stunned about how could it be then I'm... well speechless. It's just incredibly unprofessional.

Good post. It was by far Rigo's best performance I've ever seen, at least in a 12 round professional contest. You're right, it was probably easy to overlook his opposition and losing some rounds he has taken off and suspect he'd be overmatched because the jump in competition was just too steep.

Agreed. Garcia is offensive-minded, but he simply doesn't know how to effectively harness Nonito's gifts and unorthodoxy style. I've said Donaire should've changed trainers awhile ago. I can't exactly remember who I thought might be good for Donaire. Maybe someone like Nacho, bearing the language barrier. I'll have to re-check the thread.
