A bum? No. Overrated and hyped up beyond reasonable expectations? Yeah. His game didnt translate well to the higher weight classes. He could've stayed at LW and cleaned up and eventually made the move to jww, but he opted to go for the brass ring. I don't see fault in that at all. He just wasnt as good as advertised.
Nope. He's fast, but, not smart in there. And he is kind of lazy too, with his foot movement. Had he let his hands go more to the head and body, the outcome may have been different. He threw that check hook all night, until it finally worked. But, he didn't vary the attack. Understandably, there are times when had to clinch. But, he was not doing anything to actually win rounds, for the most part. Easy work for Porter.
I actually like the fact that he has stepped up, rolled the dice and lost. He has potential but he hasn't concentrated on the fundamentals. Its a shame.
Chalk him up with the rest of the guys who had natural talent, achieved some success as a result, and got entitled by it. Talent's a blessing and a curse. It's easy to underestimate the value of consistency and the dedication it takes to achieve and maintain a very high level. Broner fell in love with the superstar lifestyle before he paid his dues. It's easy to see how Mayweather lives now and take for granted the work ethic he had to get there, and Broner's a dude who fell right into that trap. So, despite accomplishing more than 99% of pro fighters ever do, he'll be viewed as a disappointment because he was his own worst enemy. He wasn't the first, and he certainly won't be the last.
He's like a college dropout. He learned to imitate SOME of James Toney's repertoire, and less of Floyd's, and decided he was the finished article when in truth he's anything but.
:good I always thought a poor man's Toney was the best parallel for him. It's the difference between memorizing an equation to cram for an exam and mastering it to know the inner workings of how and why it works. Broner was cool with superficial copying that fooled people who didn't look deeper. Thing is, it's not too late for him if he takes the time to seriously reflect on what's happened to him and why. It's going to take a hell of a lot more maturity than he's shown he's had thus far, otherwise he's going to become stuck in his new role as a contender-level sideshow.
