Theres Napolean Dynamite skinny and theres Kelly Pavlik/Tommy hearns skinny. Skinny guys have a lot of advantages in working hard. Sledge Hammer-Car Tire, Dips, Medium/Long distance running, Hills, A lot of high intensity heavy bag and padwork. Definitely learn to control the opponant with your leading hand.
How your coach tells you to fight? :huh He's not the end-all be-all for answers but when starting out, it's your best bet to listen to their advice. I've just learned to do my own research cause my coach doesn't exactly give all the tips. I have to ask questions in order to get answers.
Lateral movement is very important. The shorter guy is likely going to want to be set to punch so if you can move both ways and keep him from setting you will reduce his power.
Lots and lots of ab work aswell, im fairly tall for my weight and most guys I spar love to go to my body
Skinny and tall is an advantage in boxing for a couple of reasons: it seems like in general these types have a good range of motion with pretty quick handspeed (not always, in general) and a lot of endurance. If you look at the welters of the late seventies with 15 round fights, they were mostly 5'10 - 6' at 147/154, and they had already grown into their physique (they weren't just boys). And some of those guys could bang. The most trouble I've ever had is the tall skinny kids because even if they don't have raw strength (and some DO), they have a lot of leverage and you have to work to get inside the punching range. I agree with the previous posters, condition your body to take shots, because short guys will try to go there to take it out of you, and you need to either shoot a hard shot in their face to discourage them or learn to fight off the back foot. I would rather be Morales than Guzman any day, and rather Hearns than Cotto, but obviously with the shorter fights it seems like there is in general a bit more stockiness at the championship level than there used to be (always exceptions - Pryor never stopped throwing or got tired and he was short and stocky). Textbook boxing was made for the skinny tall quick kid. And even though Wladimir is a huge guy, I feel like he is still "skinny" for a heavyweight that tall.
:good Good post, I'm a tall skinny guy and I agree. And yeah, I think Wlad is naturally skinny, if he didn't box he'd probably be a beanpole
im a skinny guy...dont forget sometimes when ur tall and skinny u give up a lil coordination..tommy hearns had trouble skipping as do i.
Well, I mean, you are going to get your fair share of weak skinny guys, but its a bad assumption to make that a tall skinny guy can't be dangerous with the right training, technique, and attributes. And some guys are a whole lot stronger than they look. So, skinny is rarely bad if you can take advantage of it. The successful skinny guys are mostly textbook one two, one two three guys. The successful short stocky guys often have to be more unconventional and find a style that works.
