Taller than your average dude in your class is never going to be a bad thing in this sport.
It isn't the be all and end all by any means. If you want to stay down in weight and seem "tall" for your category, go for it.

im 6 3" and fight at 71kg and thers nothing better than the shock on a smaller fighters face when you beat them in close quaters and at their own game. working tha jab is the obvious one but i spent months and months practicing throwing short shots blocking and countering hit myself in face a few types but its worth it.
try it and see what the results are make sure your try it in sparring let us know how you get on

OP learn and master straight punches, you will be a beast. I was at a boxing event the other night which had total domination of awesome straight punching out of one gym. I didn't get to talk to the trainer but if straight punching high workrate and smart footwork, you can be unstoppable.

How about this: shadow box for as long as you can every day, and I mean properly. Visualise, imagine fighting, and incorporate every technique you can. Don't leave anything out because you're tall, take it all on board and by all means invent your own specialities, but never limit what will come to you on fight night. Absorb everything, use everything, and your natural range will come into play, as will the shock of a skinny infighter who'll negate you at close quarters.

I will say, speaking as a tall and light boxer; I always hated it. Always wished I wasn't so abnormally tall for my weight because it always just ended with me being bullrushed. I also fought a stupid ****ing style, I don't lead at all and tend to counterpunch, which means I didn't use my jab for ****. But good footwork is a must, for sure. And don't wait. Don't be like me. Lead and be first with the reach.

Like others said there's nothing wrong with being lanky and tall, as long as you are able to fight tall. I think there is a point where it's too much, I used to spar a guy who was very tall and I could double him over with punches to the plexus despite him being about 15 pounds heavier.

If anything, i think being tall and thin (so long as you're strong rather than fragile) is perfect for am boxing!

Yeah, that's the difference. Some boxers are 'weak skinny' and they're the ones who need to box and move and can't handle it on the inside; the 'strong skinny' ones are much harder to fight and have the strength to back up their leverage and hit you hard at any range.

I am tall and skinny - I've never seen this as a disadvantage. (6'0-1, around 154 optimum weight, currently about 147 - 75'' reach)

Perhaps its your perspective, but I work and work and work on my jab, working on throwing it from different angles, hooking off of it, uppercutting etc

Your always likely to have the better reach being the taller fighter, so maximise that advantage. It also means getting your footwork on point - though thats something all fighters should aim for.

    I'm like 5' 8" with a 71" reach. I weigh 108-117.

I've never been down before, and that include an exhibition match with a cruiserweight friend of mine (amateur). However, it's probably because he used 12oz, and I used 8. He hit me a couple of times on the chin. Nothing. He hit me on the body, and suddenly, I'm on my bicycle.

This depends on the weight class and style of the fighter. Being skinny does not matter much in the lower weight classes.

If you are tall, lanky, and skinny work on the jab, right hand off the jab, clinching and speed.

Many past greats in Fitzsimmons, Hearns, Ricardo Lopez ( Straw weight ) , and Arguello had the same build. But they also had power, so maybe you'll need that too.
