Fight of the Year - Rogan v Sexton I & II Martin Rogan and Sam Sexton treated us to not one but two domestic classics in 2009. On both occasions it was Sexton who came out on top, though not before he had been pushed all the way by the cabbie from Belfast. Rogan went into the first bout as the Commonwealth champion and had the contender in trouble early on, only for some reason to let him off the hook rather than finish the job. He paid the price as Sexton recovered and eventually won in the eighth with the Irishman unable to see out of his left eye. The second bout saw Rogan hurt again, this time a nasty cut from an accidental clash of heads hampering his attempts to win back the belt. He was pulled out of the bout by the sixth after running out of steam. Have they lost their marbles?
It is all, of course, subjective and the first Rogan vs Sexton fight is worthy of being best fight of the year, as is Rogan vs Skelton in my opinion, but for me it is still Moore vs Rhodes.
Maybe it was because I was there, but I much preferred Skelton v Rogan. To and fro, Rogan looked done but came back to win it. For me, my favourite british fights of the year were: Skelton v Rogan Watson v Gethin Dodson v Quigley Crolla v Sykes Moore v Rhodes Renda v Samuels Brilliantly, I was there to see all those fights in person bar Moore v Rhodes. Maybe stuff seems more exciting when your there rather than watching it on TV?
Rogan/Skelton was a better fight than either Rogan/Sexton. Moore/Rhodes was even better, but Renda/Samuels was probably the best.
I think Samuels Renda is a tad overated on here tbh, probably becuase of the double knockdown, dont get me wrong it was a cracking little war whiule it lasted but I'd put Moore/Rhodes, Dodson/Quigley and Simpson/Truscott 2 over. Suppose its what you prefer though.
I would definitely have Moore/Rhodes over it. I think the double KD was obviously brilliant.. but Samuels was the one who came off worse and looked like he was beaten until he survuved the round.. then destoyed Renda in the next.. great fight.
