It’s very unfortunate that many times boxing talent doesn’t translate into profit ! I am sure Fast Eddie will generate statistics to prove that Connor Benn gets more views than Inoue ! Does that mean that Connor is a more talented boxer ? I am not going to argue that but it seems nowadays social networking provides the promotion which effectively generates the profit ! Smiling Bob Arum basically moans about Terrence Crawford not selling and it’s not because he is not proficient at boxing . On the other hand we have the Paul Brothers apparently making millions !!! Perhaps as previously suggested pure boxing is a niche sport .
Sky need to get domestic talent back on Saturday nights pronto or there could be no boxing on Sky in the near future if those numbers are accurate. 15 years ago would Inoue have done 7k viewers on Sky at 4am ?? I don't believe so, fans have been conditioned by Eddie up to a point, weak card and poor opponent didn't help either.
Sad days when only another 6,999 boxing fans recognise, appreciate and get up/stay up to watch a great talent at work. Box Office means the sport is out of sight, out of mind for 99% of the general public who simply switch off totally from the sport - that has a knock on to other non Box Office fights including this fight. Eh Day has spouted so much shyte to the public and now they have no idea whether Dave Allen is an all time great or if Terence Crawford is the brother of the actor who played Frank Spencer.
The amount of damage Eddie's 10 year reign of terror on Sky has had on British boxing is immense. I'm not putting all the blame on Eddie but he's the main culprit. Will British boxing ever fully recover ?? I'm hopeful but it's going to be a long road back.
But one doesn't argue that ufc has conditioned fans to think every other MMA promotion is crap. The reason no other MMA promotion can be as hot as ufc is simply down to talent. UFC has the best fighters and pays the best money. If another promotion had the funds to take UFC fighters then the fans would watch those fighters elsewhere. No different to when WCW got hot taking business from Vince. They got Vince's top talent and the fans switched the channel. Eddie Hearn and matchroom haven't killed every other promotion. I'm not sure what Queensbury's books look like but however they look Eddie Hearn isn't responsible. If what you are saying is true that should mean DAZN should have no problem getting all the fans of matchroom boxing on Sky subscribing to DAZN but I don't think it's going to be that easy. If top rank rank ran a UK show with good fights on a Saturday night there is a no way people would just turn it off because it isn't matchroom. If Warren went back to sky are we saying his shows would flop because it isn't matchroom? Do fans of matchroom boxing not watch queensberry shows? Ya'll giving Eddie Hearn too much credit. He doesn't have that much power.
Certain fighters are thought of as Matchroom fighters only If they show up elsewhere, of course people (sky/matchroom fans) will more than likely tune in Why? Name recognition If they liked boxing as a sport first, then they would watch most shows Hence Warrens shows doing poor to average despite some of them being decent on paper The transition from SKY to any app based platform is going to be tough I mean has anyone actually done that? Hearn has a following though that will steady the ship We'll soon see if SKY is essentially WWF and Matchroom was just a WCW talent benefiting from the parent organisation I stand by what i say, i think Hearn wants a monopoly and everything eventually in house Essentially Vinces's model from the 80s and UFC's for the last how many years Giving Hearn too much credit? Can't win here You tend to say people give him a lack of credit And yes Matchroom/SKY fans hardly watch Queensbury I've a workforce of 290 staff Mostly male, and a high percentage watch boxing... SKY or Matchroom They never ever know when a BT show is on and even when i mention it, the interest is minimal Bad promoting from BT? Probably but even when people find out they still dont watch often
I do agree with alot of what you say but there is a reason he targets the football crowd. They are stupidly loyal and arent the brightest bunch. Most of them havent a clue what they are watching. Ill always use my lee selby story at an AJ fight. Lad started talking to me in the beer line. Said AJ is gonna kill them all and when i said im.lookimg forward to the selby fight he didnt have a clue who he was nevermind he was on next! Look an social media and you see it all over these diehard football fans saying Matchroom all day and they are the best etc. Fair play to Hearn as nobody else has managed this.
Inoue great great talent but he weighs almost as much as my pride and joy. Sorry not staying up late to watch his fights.
Indeed, if anybody can make this work without the Sky hype train it is Hearn. In many ways, he is a 21st century version of Don King, in that he has a much higher profile (and is arguably a bigger draw) than the majority of his roster of fighters. He’s built (with the help of Sky admittedly) such an aura around his events that there’s a massive audience that will buy tickets to his shows or a PPV who would show no interest in a typical Warren card on BT or Hennessy show on Channel 5. People associate Matchroom shows with a packed O2, MEN or summertime stadium, party atmosphere, sweet Charlie line, all the pyro, Buffer on the main event etc. Whereas these days, Warren shows just don’t match up to that, and for the ‘casual’ fan, a half empty Copper Box or Stevenage stadium feels a bit more small time and can be a right turn off.
Very accurate. Eh Day knows his market, the product is usually poor but well packaged and the man can sell anything.
