    Hey all,

During COVID-19 i have been trying to make do with whatever boxing i can find and fortunately sky sports have been showing a lot of old fights from early 90s to the mid 00s. I started getting interested in boxing around 2003 as a kid but didnt really pay attention to organising bodies (WBC, WBA etc) which now i was probably for the best.

Though one thing keeps coming up, these shows from 90s to 00s the vast majority were for the IBO title ? I know now this is seen as a lesser title widely but was there a reason it was coveted or sought for so long in the UK or was it just a case we didnt have that many talented boxers who could go for the like of WBC etc ?

    Cheers

I’m not sure to be honest mate around the same period the WBU was also the flavour of the month!!

Use to love the boxing scene in the early 2000’s when I was 18/19, I always remember the light middleweight British scene around 2001 when we had

    Wayne Alexander
    Takaloo
    Anthony Farnell
    Steve Roberts
    Richard Williams

great little era we saw a couple of them match up great memories!!

Sky have always been about smoke and mirrors when it comes to boxing and the same applies to these sort of titles getting hype.

    That's basically it.
WBU, WBF (2 versions), IBO and WBO when it was till a minor one, I've seen all of them getting promoted as "world championship fights" back in the day.

A few others from memory GBU, GBC, IBU and IBA. Ricky Hatton was a proud WBU champion with 16 defences.

I remember the WBU introducing a 20 points a round scoring, instead of the 10 points system. Just to confuse things a bit more.

The majority were from early 90s to early 00s, Frank Warren or Frank (Kellie) Maloney
