The SPL deal is not the reason Setanta are broke. They made a contract with the EPL that was made up of fantasy figures they could never even dream of affording.
My Scottish friend is spot on for the spl being the bread and butter.they made there name with the spl.
I think they were doing fine with their SPL, European football and Irish sports etc. but were never going to challenge Sky or particularly make a lot of money without aiming for the more mainstream fan. Thus they went out willy nilly buying basically everything sky didn't show and poaching some rights, paying more than they should have done-most notably on the EPL, SPL and FA contracts. At the end of the day, they gave it a go but were in wayyyyy over their heads. Somebody (I can't remember here or if it was on digital spy) said-"Why would people want to pay x-amount for Setanta to see stuff Sky used to show anyway?" As in the SPL, FA Cup, US Tour Golf, Boxing etc.
he was offering 20 million for 51% of the company that was a **** take, with all their debt that was still too low of an investment, it was clever by the guy but with all the debt i guess he didnt feel there was any profitable margins unless he got 51%
Setanta are finished, it's just a matter of time now. People will start cancelling their subscriptions now that there's no football. They can ill afford to lose anymore customers.
if your on the 3 month deal with them than you'll have to wait for them to go bust. i guess if you cancel your direct debit it's unlikely they'll go to court to get their money back. lol It's all about ESPN now.
