Teddy Atlas worked for Cus for free, went to all those amateur shows , and brought tyson through the ranks for nothing. Teddy was the no 1 trainer in there and Teddy learned values in boxing and in prision and learned not to be ****ed with and was the only one who could keep Mike in control He has proved it himself , top analyst and boxing trainer producing multiple champs in his favourite weight class. - unlike that drunken fraud- right place right time rooney who unlike teddy spent recent time in prison and unconscious from booze for years Cus wont be rolling in nothing , teddy has every right to be there
It looked more like Tyson kissed him and Jacobs got a little startled and reacted with acceptance but still.......Cotto doing this...I see other dudes from different cultures doing this....not my thing at All. We don't even hug in our family.
He also kissed Bruno on the cheek and that's alright after that uppercut in the Hilton and after Steele stopped Frank on the ropes. Rooney was no longer there. The way Mike went towards Bruno and the way he hugged him... The way he hugged Teddy and cried b4 his pro debut... Absolutely out of the way I thought about that White Shark inside the ropes.
I find it hard to believe anything Teddy says, funny how nobody has ever mentioned this except Teddy Teddy Atlas, the only guy ever kicked out of the Damato house hmmmm..... (and Wilfred Benitez as well)
Teddy was a middle-class kid who decided to become a thug. A thug that wound up in jail who got Cus to bail him out. They said Cus gave a real great performance in front of the judge. Oscar worthy. Yeah. Teddy stayed a thug. He needed a gun to fight a 15 year old. And even admitted needing a gun to want to hunt down to murder one of his fighters. Wasn't that the story ? Rooney was a PRO FIGHTER. Atlas was barely an amateur. Rooney made Tyson better. Atlas left when Tyson was still an amateur. Rooney took over, continued to help Tyson get better, took him pro, and helped guide him to unify the title. Moorer was not Atlas's creation. Povetkin wasn't either.
There were a few others - read Atlas book. I am glad to read this article about Atlas going back to Catskills, he served his time and put the graft in under D'mato. Atlas Cops and Kids program can also be very proud that they have an Olympian for London 2012 - Marcus Browne. I am very pleased to hear this - Atlas is a legend. **** the haters:yep
There are many homo rumors about tyson, and he has said a lot of suspect things. Only tyson, rooney and maybe atlas know what really went down in that house. Probably some sick sugar ray leonard type ****.
Be careful what you read / believe. There are a lot of different stories out there about what happened with Teddy, Cus, and Tyson, and they don't exactly all agree with each other. For instance, in the above-linked article, the writer says: "A nasty breakup, caused by how the young Tyson was receiving preferential treatment, sent Atlas packing." Well, we all know the situation was a lot more serious than that, so this writer clearly has a (severe) anti-Atlas agenda. For a very different view on that particular situation, read this: http://www.baraban.org/go/showthread.php?t=6512 --------- So what's really true? Who knows ......
This is basically what I was told, years ago, by someone who lived near Cus's camp and knew them all very well.
To make it short: Tyson inappropriate touched a young girl. Atlas got pissed and confronted Tyson with a gun (which was smart). Tyson got pissed and wanted to kill Atlas. D'Amato fearing his prized pupil would be heading back to jail sent Tyson away for a little while so he {D'Amato} could get things in order. Atlas is gone. Tyson is back in the gym. That's what most people view as the real story I would say. Atlas's view that Tyson should have been kicked out of the Gym was probably right. I just wouldn't say permanently. A Teacher is only supposed to teach a lesson; not destroy it. Even though each person is different, you still have to discipline the pupil. At this point, I think what Atlas's point was that Cus was bending his own rules because he was getting old and put to much into Tyson to risk losing him. Although I do recall in one of the books it may have been more about having to continue on because Cayton/Jacobs had invested in Tyson's training. But anyway...You shouldn't compensate just because you want that last big hurrah. Your legacy is more about sticking by your ideals. I think Atlas thought he bent them. I could be wrong though. I wasn't there. Like you said, A lot of stories. In the end, nobody should be looked up to like a God. Father's aren't perfect. Everyone has issues...including Atlas (which has always been my point).
