So I recently watched a few Rafael Marquez fights, and something occurred more often than not.... CUTS. Marquez' punches easily opened up cuts on his opponents faces. His fights with Israel Vasquez and Silence Mabuza are a great example. WHO are some other fighters that had "slashing" punches?
Sandy Saddler, How he opened them was a little, unsavoury. Sandy "The Ripper" Saddler sounds very choice and cool though.
Nearly every boxer who fought Henry Cooper or Chuck Wepner would’ve likely enjoyed their 15 mins of fame as a “slasher”. More seriously though, Sal Sanchez was a good practitioner of slashing type shots - one scribe described his fists as “razors” - very apt.
Ali, Ali took extra step to insure cuts. I'm not sure it separates him from any other boxers but he wen't as far as hiring various guru's to help the process, so he obviously had some intent on it.
Jack Johnson - yes, different glove type and size back in his day - but in his protraction of fights and express intention to maim, he often left his opponents wearing blood masks - and the cuts weren’t always in the usual suspect areas - they were everywhere - the ripped faces of Burns, Ketch, Flynn and Jeffries attesting to same.
I read Henry Cooper state that while he liked and respected Ali, he didn’t believe Ali was on the level when Ali said he backed off seeing how badly cut Henry was. Rather, Cooper said Ali really went for the eye when he saw how badly damaged it was. Not to overstate it, but in both fights, Ali never seemed entirely comfortable with Cooper and his style - Henry always presented as an awkward customer for Muhammad, IMO and naturally, Ali would’ve taken any opportunity to have the fight stopped in his favour as soon as possible - all fair of course.
Orlando Zulueta was known for his propensity for blood-letting. The only thing was was that he had a very, very low % of stoppages for the amount of fights he had. Perhaps he cut them often but just never enough to stop them. Regardless, the story goes that one of his opponents was cut up pretty bad and the referee stopped the action to examine the Cuban's gloves. So sure was he that Zulueta had some foreign object embedded in his gloves that he just lightly glazed his hand over them for fear of being cut himself, and was apparently amazed that it was nothing but glove.
