Should you slip to the inside, or the outside? Does it matter? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?
Depends what you're wanting to do, me being a southpaw I like to slip inside and throw a right hook. I guess the best thing to do orthodox would be to slip outside, step and counter with a left hook..I think the right hand on the inside would be too short
I'm orthodox and I do both. Inside slips can be great if you have a good left uppercut. The disadvantage of slipping to the inside is that you're susceptible to your opponent's right hand. That's why, when you slip to the inside, you must deliver your counter punch very swiftly so that you can get out of the way of any possible right hands. Outside slips are more common and recommended. Slipping to the outside can give you the opportunity to deliver a right cross or a right uppercut. A picture-perfect example of an outside slip to right cross counter would be James Toney's counter right cross that he landed in his fight against Iran Barkley: Watch from 1:30 to 1:36 [yt]CMLqQrGDQhw[/yt]
Slipping inside can provide an opening for a left hook or slinging a right hand over top of it. Or get you hit with a right hand that was coming behind it... Slipping outside can provide an opening for a counter jab or a right hand on the rebound. It could also get you cracked with a right hand or another jab or two. I think it depends on your preference, reflexes, and defense.
I'm also a southpaw. You say you slip inside then throw a right hook? I slip outside then go for the right hook, sometimes to the body. Sometimes I slip outside, bob inside and jab.
man i love that fight Toney putting on masterful performance , did anyone notice george foremans commentating on that fight was truely ridiculous .
Depends what you are trying to do....and what s your opponent“s best weapon.... If you have a great left uppercut......with some experience, could work very well !
Gotta do both or you get predictable. Slip inside the jab then: left uppercut to the solar plexus HARD jab to the head 3 (head or body) Weave right-2 Slip outside the jab then: 1 (head or body) 2 (head) 3 (simultaneous with slip, aiming for the center of the face) 3 (after slip...come up fast, snap out the hook to counter the right hand. Try a left uppercut too, can go to the head or body...gotta be pretty quick though) Right uppercut (head) Slip-turn them with your right hand-3-2 Slip-weave left-3 (or left uppercut) (head or body) Slip-move shoulder first into their armpit and smother them There's literally endless possibilities. For me, going outside is the most natural and has the most options, but it also leaves you susceptible to a lot of shots if you aren't good at it (I'm not). Working on slipping inside more. Gotta do both or people will figure it out and just punch where they know you're gonna be.
Yeah great fight, one of Toney's best ever performances sad to watch Barkley getting banged about like that
Depends on the other guy and your stance. Orthodox I like to slip out, cover with the parry hand (right), throw my own jab or left hook to the body, and step right away from the straight. Maybe I am not advanced enough to get it, but slipping inside would put you in a horrible spot if he was following up the jab with a straight or hook. Against a southpaw I would do either because of the inevitability of the following shot with his power hand. The jabs are always clashing so I would slip out, throw a straight high, and a left hook low. Or throw the straight low and the left hook high. Start playing with heights and you have another whole chapter.
Tyson used to slip inside first, and then outside in a preemptive fashion. It allows you to use your left hand to devastating effect.
i think that slipping outside is more natural, if you are fast you have clear openings to the head and ribs. i'm southpaw and personally favorite is slipping outside and uppercut to the ribs + (bonus) straight left to the head. or you could slip and throw a simultaneous cross to the liver, boom, then you can follow up with a right hook. it all depends on your opponent's tactics, if you see he often throws one-two's you might not want to slip inside.:nono
