ok are we talking about the a to b speed or the combos that could be put together. marciano's speed of punch was pretty good he could deliver it very fast and effectively. he also hid his load up (pause) so when he did punch there wasn't a reload he just went to the other hand. but his combinations are pretty sluggish. almost all other fighters he fought at champ level where able to beat him to the punch/between punches. but take shannon briggs. VERY fast hands, even for the weight. form a to be and combinations. but he is slow and cemented to the ground. and loads up too much. so what we choosing? i think monzon is a good choice.
For Marciano, more effort needs to be made to separate his hand speed from his slowness of foot. Ditto for Schmeling, whose hand speed advantage may have been the key difference over Walker. Willard was also much faster than Moran, and looked the faster man with Floyd Johnson as well. Jess suffers badly in contrast to a still formidable Lil' Artha and peak Dempsey, but his hand speed looks all right in his filmed successes as well as with Firpo. The common presumption is that whoever this champion was, he was likely a heavyweight. Below that classification, Watt and Gazo could be solid candidates. Watt was described by eyewitnesses during his heyday as slower than most lightweights, yet he won a clear decision over Davis, Jr. Gazo even managed to look slow in taking out and retiring Wajima.
