First off Clottey is the one who really lost my respect last night. The man appears to be a 10 round fighter and a terrible finisher. He was given the best gift he could have a Cotto cut and didnt get the job done. One of the HBO announcers complained about painting the canvas too late, leaving it slippery. I have to agree. Both men were slipping and sliding around out there, although Clottey was a lot more, especially after his fall. Continuing on that vein, I think the canvas was more responsible for the body slam than Cotto was. In some ways I think the cut and fall cost each man the fight. Cotto would have fought better if he could see, and Clottey might have won a couple crucial rounds if his leg had been feeling better. Well never know for sure. Then again, I think Clottey cost himself the fight. The HBO team made special mention afterward that Clottey didnt go to the body as much as they thought he would. Why would he? He had a cut to aim right hands at. Duh. People are saying that Margarito is behind Cotto now. I dont think that for a minute. Watching him turn into the same fighter as he was during the beat down did not instill confidence in me. Yes, tactically speaking it was the right thing to do as Clottey didnt capitalize, and if he fought the whole fight that way he probably would have easily won. But in the big picture, it means Clottey forced him to plan B and made him look bad doing so. I think the ref should have stopped the action before Cotto hit Clottey behind the head, but maybe it was too quick for him. In the slo-mo replay it was obvious that nothing good could have come from the way they locked up. Still, tough to do in real time. Im not blaming the ref, just wish he could have been quicker. Does Cotto invite uppercuts or what? That stance he uses against the ropes looks terrible, chin sticking out there about a mile. If I were going to fight him Id spend many hours on my uppercut. Cotto has taken quite the beatings over the last year and a half. Perfect time for Pac Man to fight him.
so in that respect cotto and clottey both should agree to just rematch and settle the score. Oh wait, cotto runs like a ***** when he gets in trouble, gets outlanded doing so (while doing your plan b), and gets the nod anyways. No wonder molsey doesnt want cotto in nyc.
It seems Margarito fight took something away from Cotto. Mentally. Last night he looked lost just like in the end of Margarito fight. The cut was bad, in Margarito fight his nose was bleeding, next time something else... I think Cotto has found his limit
