Smallest boxer you'd pick over Primo Carnera?

This thread doe rather underline the hypocrisy, of the people who employ the "bigger is better argument".

The same people who apply this argument most vehemently, in support of modern fighters, are the quickest to dismiss it, when the older fighter has the size advantage.

It is almost comical in some cases!

 

Larry Gains beat Carnera in 1933.Carnera was 27 years old and was having his 67th fight.
Carnera had 68lbs on 200lbs Gains.

Robinson would have been an easy winner against Maxim if the fight were scheduled for 10 or 12 rounds. The longer the fight the better it is for Carnera obviously. By the way, Maxim was a very good boxer with an iron chin. He had his limitations but he could take it. I think Maxim would have a good shot himself against Carnera.

As for Robinson, the question as I understood it was who is the smallest man who MIGHT beat Carnera. Robinson would have to dazzle him with quick combos and then get out and keep moving, but I feel he would have a shot, although a distinct underdog.

 

I think the problem for Maxim would have been the same as it was for Loughran,lack of enough power to keep Primo honest.

 

Certainly true, but Maxim I think was taller and rangier than Tommy. I would favor Primo because of his size, but Maxim wouldn't be that much smaller than Maloney who defeated Carnera. I think Maxim would have a shot.

I checked Maxim's record which is not totally complete as to weights but is largely complete. In fights with weights given, he fought 21 men who weighed more than 200 lbs. and went 19-2, losing a split decision to Johnny Flynn in 1944 and losing to Heinz Neuhaus in 1958 when he was basically finished and losing to everyone. His heaviest victims were Al Brown at 265, Edgardo Romero at 250, and Francisco Cruz at 238. The best over 200 lb. opponent that he defeated was probably Ole Tandberg.

While your point is well taken, I still think Maxim has a shot at outboxing Carnera.

A lot might depend on how much wrestling and mauling the referee allows.

 

If you buy into the true greatness and especially hitting ability of Bob Fitzsimmons, wouldn't you automatically be obligated to choose him over a fighter like Primo?

 

I agree he has a shot I was really thinking out loud.
