From the RBR thread. I was asking myself the same question

on the 2nd and 3rd knockdowns after Smoger counted to 8 he took a long time asking PEDerson if he was okay and then would push Lucas back and stay there for a few second buying time for Lamont. I think Smoger is one of the best refs in the sport but tonight he was clearly trying to assist PEDerson.

Who cares... Just made sure nobody can give excuses of an early stoppage.

I didn't have the impression he was trying to help peterson, he did great, as usual

In addition to the above, the fighter who scores the knockdown is to go to the neutral corner and stay there until the ref signals him back in.All three knockdowns Lucas was three quarters or further out of the neutral corner before Smoger counted the manditory eight count.

Nahhh, I know what you mean with pushing Lucas back but I think it's cause Lucas was almost standing on Peterson's toes during the count, he should have been stood a bit further back.

Matthysse was supposed to lose tonight. GBP must now sacrifice an undefeated champion (Garcia) by putting him in the ring with The Machine.

good point. Smoger was in no win situation. If he stopped the count and did that bull**** Bute-Andrade thing of forcing the fighter into the neutral corner before counting, people would complain.

In the end he did the best thing, by giving Peterson a few more seconds.

    Smoger a great ref

I noticed this as well. Glad Lucas took care of business and finished the job, but it looked like Smoger was stalling a bit and I have the utmost respect for Smoger.

What about the hits to the back of the head? Untrue. You're the biased one. Smoger was fine.

It was the right move, as Lucas was a little too eager to leave the neutral corner. Giving Peterson an extra couple of seconds made more sense then sending Matthysse all the way back, but Smoger would've been well in his rights to do just that.

The only time i thought that was the case was after the big left hook KD (the second one?). The other times i thought he was clearly stalling but i'll rewatch.

The only thing fishy was the slow count. - And it was REALLY slow.

I don't know what to think, but let's face it, Smoger gets paid to do a specific job. He does what he's told, or he doesn't work. So .....

But then Smoger could have disqualified Mathysse for those incredibly blatant rabbit shots. (which were inexcusable.)

maybe Smoger was told to try to make the fight go the distance. I can see how that would make more $$$ for the bookies.
