The way Savage hit the floor face first against Cooper in 1994 reminds me of the same way Mugabi hit the floor with his face from "G-Man" in 1991....

I know Mugabi was an enigma, but I think Duff and Francis ****ed up after the Hagler fight by forcing Mugabi to melt down to 154 pounds... They only did that cuz they thought Mugabi could easily beat the main dude's there since Hearns had vacated his WBC belt and, they had no plans of ever fighting McCallum anyway for the WBA title....

Point is, by late 1986, Mugabi was weak at 154 and really struggling to get that low... But Duff and Francis figured Duane Thomas would be fodder, and he would've been if his long hook / thumb didn't find Mugabi's eye in round 3 back in Dec. 1986...

How Mugabi made 154 for Rene Jacquot in the summer of '89 is anyone's guess, but Mugabi was a total limp dick in need of Viagra at 154 for Norris in 1990....

During Mugabi's '86 loss to Thomas and his title loss to Norris in 1990, Mugabi had fought several fights between 160 to 168 pounds.....

I can imagine that! I met him at a amatuer boxing show when roy was an old man. He still looked strong but with a far away look in his eye. big hands he had.

He lacked skill ,but certainly not courage.
Not too many wanted to war with Frazier.

How about that first right hand that keeps savage honest. Savage comes tearing and Cooper clips him with a right that causes him to pause and cool down. That right there shows you the difference. Savage didnt have the poise or coolness much less the skill.

    Yep.

He looked like one of the guys from other sports that want to call a timeout. Imagine how bad it would have been if Cooper lost the fight by giving one of his flat performances?

The story at the time of the Mississippi tournament referred to early in this thread was that Savage, who claimed 42 wins, all by knockout, in bare-knuckle fights stood watching Tony Tubbs and Bonecrusher Smith have a hard sparring session and was shocked by the nature of it. He said something after it was over and one of them said, in effect, 'This is what we do for a living', then shortly afterwards he pulled out with an injured thumb. This Cooper fight in Canada was a few months later.

An bareknuckle fighter post 1900 should be flattered to be compared to Tony Gallento.

That was pure gold. Savage was a hype job. I think he was one and done as a professional boxer.

I would recommend the people choice tournament for hard core fans. Not all the fights were good, but the interviews of the fighters who won and lost were shockingly honest.
