Tommy Burns stalks Jack O Brien as referee Jim Jeffries trundles around after them. Tommy Burns vs Jack O'brien HD - YouTube
Seen it previously - great footage. As a very involved ref., it’s likely the most exercise Jeffries had seen in a while. Love the different, inventive ways Jeffries endeavoured to prise them apart - at some points after trying to separate them and failing, Jeffries just stood back as if to say, ah screw it. LOL. O’Brien fixated on either running or holding. Tell me, if possible, but who’s the tall guy mainly standing mid ring holding his hat directing pre fight traffic - an announcer or MC of sorts? He’s a bit taller than Jeff - if I had to guess anyone I might’ve said Corbett but not confidently because the old film makes it difficult to discern exact facial features though the hair build and height sort of fits.
Just viewed this one which was only added 10 hours ago - Jeffries v Sharkey - only about 50 odd seconds worth but the HD and extra FPS create an extraordinary upgrade in quality and a better opportunity to make some sort of assessment of the styles and action. This content is protected
Throw punch -- close -- mangle each other in clinch -- repeat. The punches almost look as of they're designed to be one-offs to allow the distance to close. Interesting.
I think that's the ring announcer Frank "Megaphone" Cook. He was certainly a fixture at Naud Junction around this time, and noted for his height and enormous voice.
EDIT: My bad, apologies @cross_trainer - I’m guilty of skim reading and already forgot that I posted a clip of Jeffries-Sharkey, LOL, I thought you meant Burns-O’Brien - doh! CLOSE EDIT Yeah, but having seen Burns in some other fights like Moir and Squires I think the pointedly defensive (literally running) O’Brien was far more the guilty party here - Burns being the more aggressive slugger but one who could also box pretty well would’ve likely preferred it more open to allow for greater free exchanges - O’Brien was best served running and/or clamping it down otherwise Burns could very well have inflicted far more damage and put him out before the limit.
