I'm helping a friend with something and I need to come up with the smoothest boxer. My first thought was Sal Sanchez, anybody else spring to mind?

I'm also trying to come up with fighters who had bad reputations but were actually pretty good guys, I'm thinking Hopkins, anybody else.

    Thanks.

gerry penalosa. his movements are fluid and he's a textbook puncher so he's beautiful to watch

    anthony thompson
    the light middle

as smooth and fluid a boxing style as there is.

no way, no how could you call hopkins a smooth boxer through any part of his career.

a technical fighter yes but smooth implies/flowing punches/nice feet and rythem and continuos punching and combo`s without breaking up a fight.

Thanks for Thompson, but I was using Hopkins as an example of a fighter who has a bad reputation but is actually a pretty decent guy.

IMO hamed and jones styles were not smooth.

they were both 2 herky jerky, unorthodox/jump in with either hand and potshot and get out using speed and unusula angles.

they did not flow and put punches together 90% of the time.

ali could be in some fights, well when he was cassus clay he definatley was but post ban he turned into much more of a give and take fighter.

hearns as a welter/light middle was a smooth fighter.

dawson falls into this mould, albeit he is still a little to reliant on his right hand and falls out of position with his left still squaring himself up and not moving his feet as well from his left side.

but he should get more rounded as time goes.

hamed and jones were so incredibly agile that they did things other fighters couldnt do effortlessly. Look at their defense...it was amazing how smooth they were while avoiding flak....and they moved effortlessly from defense to devastating offense.

kessler , although americans tend not to like the stand up style, is in a european context, as smooth and technically flawless as this style can possibly get.

i try to make my definition of what i beleive smooth should mean.

a fighter with a flowing style/willing to let his hands go/not reliant on one hand or one punch/willing to stay in the pocket and slip and parry while firing back/nice balance/throws lots of technically correct punches/can fight of the back or front foot/comfertable from range and inside.

this used to be an american trait and was known in europe as the american style when i first got into boxing in the 70`s.
