Very, very interesting thread. Good posts all round :good I'd say Jersey Joe was smoother than Ali as well. Don't have a huge amount to contribute as A) all bases seem to have been covered B) I'm not quite certain whether who I believe to be smooth IS smooth. I first thought of Mark Johnson, but then realised he wasn't smooth, he was sharp :rofl
Sweet, i wouldn't put Ibarra on quite the same level as most of the other notable Panamanian stylists, but you're right he was still a nice fighter.I could be doing with watching the 3-4 fights i have with him them again really. Luis Estaba and Enrique Pinder are two other guys worth mentioning here for lighter weight stylists as well. Rodriguez and Laguna i think i might rewatch again soon.I think they might be two who just haven't quite clicked with me yet.
Some shouts for smooth fighters: 1. 118. Alberto Davila. Just a really good mechanic in the ring, and even in the fights that he lost, it always seemed like he knew exactly what he wanted to do, and never really beat himself. 2. 140. Saoul Mamby. Kind of a weird style, but when I saw him outpunch Maurice Watkins while spinning off the ropes and rolling with his opponent's shot to minimizwe the effect, I knew he had to be mentioned.
Although his most famous fights ended brutally (Gomez, Lopez I & II), I'd definitely describe Salvador Sanchez as smooth. He seemed smooth and effortless maneuvering his opponent into his punches. He sometimes didn't care and was unfazed by getting hit which maybe detracts from his smoothness a little bit. Definitely no argument with Marcel or Pep in the weight class.
Was DeLeon consistently smoother than Toney? (granted, he didn't loiter at the weight for long but he looked pretty smooth to me) :huh
Can't agree with that call. Zarate was pretty much the opposite kind of structured, textbook stylist. I thought Arguello was more fluid, and I wouldn't call him smooth, either.
At CW, I'd say so, yes. The man could move, slip, counter. Very light on his feet at his best. Toney was far more stationary.
From the footage of Estaba on Youtube against Rodolfo Rodriguez I don't know if I'd really consider him. He had the same elegant look to his stance that a lot of the Panamanian stylists did, but his feet were often misplaced and his punches often too straight and inaccurate to class as really smooth. He seemed pretty awkward to me, like someone who was brought up to fight in that manner and never really grasped the technical efficiency of it, but made it work anyway.
Sugar Baby Rojas came to mind but I havent seen anything from him in a while so I might be mistaken. Carlos Teo Cruz aswell...but Ive only seen highlights of him..havent seen him in a while either.
Shout out to Marco Antonio Barrera in around 126-130lbs. His combination's were so fluid, they didn't look forced at all.
First time i seen Gilberto Roman i just thought this is just a tiny Buchanan good picks there I'd disagree Duran blended everything together so well, Just perfectly although so did Pea but i just think he's not quie as smooth as Duran
