So Alvarez-Chavez could be "the biggest fight in Mexico's history." Will it happen?

With Arum/Golden Boy trying to make it happen you don't just feel assured, do you?

Seems that if it doesn't happen in the next 8-10 months it won't hapen t all on account of weight.

Alvarez would have to go up to MW. No way Jr can make 154.

If this somehow manages to pull through, then that says something about the other fight.

Both are padded champs but I think Saul might be in over his head with the weight. Anyone know what he usually weighs on fight night?

    It will not happen.

TR and GBP won't be sorting out their differences any time soon. If and when they eventually do, Chavez Jr would have made the move up to 168 long before that.

"the biggest fight in Mexico's history." :rofl,

    Marquez vs Morales
    Marquez vs Soto
    Salido vs Gonzales
    Mares vs Arce
    H. Marquez vs Segura

would all be better quality fights, BUT not money wise.

The 154 division is going to be red hot in the next couple of years, so if your Canelo, why move up. Instead of spinning this fight they should concentrate on making the fights the fans want - Canelo v Kirkland, Lara etc and Chavez v Martinez, Pirog, Golovkin etc.

We'll never see it, Junior is huge compared to Alvarez weight wise and Oscar won't wish one of his potential cash cows jumping up weight divisions where he loses certain physical advantages. I'd pick JCC to win, Canelo seems over-rated to me.

'Better quality fights' does not automatically mean 'bigger fights'. The thread-starter's questions is not that laughable. You have the son of a boxing god, vs the golden child who's regarded as a more worthy son of the god than actual son is. It has all the ingredients for a really good fight, and seeing as though it's guaranteed to be the highest grossing bout in Mexico for a long time (maybe ever!), billing it as the "biggest fight", is justified.

Golden Boy would have to be extremely reckless to make this fight if they weren't offered a greater share of the pot. People can talk about matching Alvarez up with Mayweather being another case of their poor treatment of prospects, but Mayweather is recognized as a quality fighter, does business with them, and is a smaller guy. Chavez by contrast is promoted by their biggest rival and would be much bigger in the ring than Alvarez. This doesn't even mention the fact that Alvarez is seen as a (marginally) more legitimate champion than Chavez; Golden Boy have no reason to go into a situation that in all likelihood would serve only to build up Chavez.

Would be a pretty boring fight too if it ever happens, with cruiserweight Chavez once again bullying a guy around his ring with his mere size and throwing lots of partially blocked soft punches.

"biggest MONEY fight" to the people getting the pesos from the fight.

To me its a fight between two very popular fighters, not even top 3 in their own division, biggest money fight, but not actual Great Fight, even if it's a classic for the ages, it's still between two non top fighters.

and all the Mexicans I know are well aware that Jr is a fraud of a champ, and that Canelo can get beat when he fights the best. They would much rather watch Marquez vs Morales, they'll pay 100$ for that one on ppv, those two get mad respect. Marquez is up there just below Chavez to the Mexicans. :deal

They are talking about the Azteca stadium and one third of the population in front of the tv screen.

You might not like it, but if the forecasts are right it would be the biggest fight in Mexican history without question.

If you want to say there have been better or more important fights, sure.

I doubt Canelo stays with GBP too far past his current contract. The kid has way too much business acumen to not go it alone once his name his big enough, a la Mayweather and Sturm. Unlike those guys, Canelo has a real promotional company with several pretty good fighters under its banner (Tomoki Kameda, Juan Carlos Salgado, Denver Cuello, Oscar Blanquet), and can probably make pretty decent PPV cards on his own. He'll still probably use someone like GBP as a contractor, but I doubt he'll stick with anyone he feels is holding him back.

Unless Arum puts the kabosh on it, I think it will happen eventually.

Well, I guess that speaks volumes, considering both of them are considered frauds, somewhat.
