So an Undisputed Champion had Boxersize Ben in his corner, and...a YouTube analyst?

What is going on here? Can someone explain how Ben Davison acquired his boxing wisdom? Ben seems like a very smart guy in that he's a master of building people up and getting a lot of work out of them. He held fat camp for 400lb Fury and acted the part of his therapist and friend. Yet still, what is qualifying him as a trainer of a p4p fighter? He's in his 20's and looks like he's never been in a fight.

Is this an Adam Booth situation wherein a trainer convinces a fighter they're some sort of mad genius soothsayer when it comes to boxing, and they parlay that relationship into others and before long they have a stable of fighters, without actually KSAB? I remember seeing a John Fury interview (credible source, of course) where he described Ben as nothing more than Fury's friend, and said he knew f*** all.

The next matter is this Lee Wylie fella. A youtube boxing analyst can provide some insight perhaps, but should he really be the second trainer of a p4p fighter? Plenty of posters here can do some video editing and draw lines on the screen and act like they know what's happening at certain moments of a fight, but do they really? Taylor himself seems to have spent more time in the gym than the rest of his corner combined.

Josh Taylor still has a helluva resume, and has shown he's significantly better than he was last night. He's not finished by any means. I fear that Ben Davison's true talent is making people think he is a good trainer, rather than being one. Fans of Taylor need to hope he had a problem with that right shoulder, because if he didn't then his Adonis Stevenson approach to the fight is nothing more than shocking.

I was freaking wondering if that was the same Lee Wylie...

And is he a boxing fella that started making YouTube videos or vice versa?

John Fury was mad at Ben for allowing Tyson to fight Wilder in 2018 and kept trying to keep him slim. Fury is a natural fat man. A big MON. Train him hard and give him the correct amount of calories and his looks don't matter.

Rushed into it but Tyson is his own man and makes them decisions. Same for anybody else. Wilder wouldn't have fought him if he felt he was a threat so it was a smart gamble.

Trainers are a small piece of the puzzle ,especially if they're picking up fighter LATE in their careers.

A boxer is almost a finished article after they've done it for 10+ odd years, it's very hard to change them. Very hard to add to them. They WILL revert to type when they end up in the trenches.

Fighters make the difference, especially when they are at the late stages of their careers. They have to make the choices and decisions.

Josh Taylor is overrated anyway. I keep hearing and seeing his name buzzing around the place all of a sudden but in a division like that it doesn't take much to get belts sniped off you.

Here's what I think is happening:

Ben Davison is in way over his head and understands that he isn't the Boxing Genius he's selling himself as. What to do? Go and find an actual boxing genius, but one with no profile so that Ben remains the star of the show. Benny Boy just f****** typed Boxing Genius into youtube and this Lee Wylie fella popped up.

It looks like he's an expert at video editing and social media. Has he ever been in a fight? Has he spent a lot of time in a gym? Should f****** Rummy become the second of a p4p fighter? I'm very confused at all of this. Seems like Josh is wrapped up in some scammy stuff.

I now want to see @Rumsfeld and Mathew Fouts as head trainers in opposite corners.*

    * In fairness to @Rumsfeld, he's just putting his 2¢ in, whereas Fouts is actually selling himself as a master technique coach.

Absolute new age bollocks the lot of it. It is so funny seeing people who have never boxed getting excited by some simple insight or a online breakdown video. If you walk into any boxing club this is just normal stuff. Look at this Mark ****** on here, all excited by Fouts talking Absolute rubbish because he has never boxed. 99% percent of the Internet stuff is nonsense.

Taylor looks to be regressing… I'm not sure about Davison… The guy was a PE teacher a few years ago now he's some sort of expert genius trainer.. Haney doesn't look any better under him either to be honest.. i'm sure he's a nice lad and all the David Brent comparisons aside he is a good analyst but I just don't think he's a great trainer when you cut down to the substance of things.. The cringe pimp coats are laughable as well.. Josh for my money looked better under the McGuigans, they are much more strict and disciplined.. Frampton regressed after leaving them as well.. I mean Jesus… Telling someone like Josh Taylor he needs a knockout against a guy who most thought would be a walk over says a lot about Davisons abilities.. if I were Josh I'd take a long hard look at my current set up… I'm not convinced he'll be any better right now at 147… I would stay at 140 and regroup.. quite sad to see a fight out of that stature struggling like that even though I think Catterall is pretty damn good in retrospect..

The only reason any boxer would want me anywhere near his corner is for taking photos/video. And even there, there are surely better options than me.

I don't think Angelo Dundee ever boxed, either. True, Dundee probably knew a lot more, but being motivational is considered an important skill to have in these kinds of things.

Lots of the best sports coaches never made is as competitors in their sport, or at very least weren't successful at their sport.

Most of the great soccer coaches, rugby coaches, basketball coaches were never stars in their respective field.

Most of the best trainers in boxing around today never fought professionally or had limited careers.

The idea that you have to be a good boxer to be a great coach is silly.

People are throwing mud on Davison's name. In a few decades he would become another Angelo Dundee.

I'm not saying a coach needs to be a top pro to be a good trainer. I'm saying you need to have participated in the sport at some level, even if it's sparring at an amateur level, to actually know what's happening with your fighter. Boxing knowledge is accumulated slowly. There is a LOT to know in this sport which is why the best trainers are older and have more or less lived in the gym being around boxing for 30-40 years.

Ben Davison, as far as we know, is a PE teacher who befriended a suicidal Tyson Fury. How much actual time has he spent in a gym around top pros or amateurs prior to getting his gig with Taylor? The second of the team is a YouTube analyst. How much time has this guy spent in an actual gym around top pros or amateurs prior to this gig with Taylor? Styles in this sport will evolve, training methods will evolve, but the fundamentals of this sport will never change.

You're bringing up team sports, and maybe you're correct about coaching them. This is not a team sport. If I need to learn how to throw the BEST jab in the world, I am not going to employ someone who has never thrown a jab.
