He was not famous, but Martinez should be in the list as well.

Hindsight yes, but at the time Hagler was coming off the Vito draw, and the feeling was he might for all his ability be a bit of a choker.

Curry was, (at the time, some would of said ) the finest fighter on the Planet going into his bout with Colin Jones. Indeed anyone there that night who found Jones' nose can still give it back to NEC, who will give it back to its grateful owner. ;)

Hopkins, came over on the back of a couple of wins and his performances since proved he was not over the hill

I'm not old enough to know but what were people's opinions of Winky Wright when he had a few fights over here in the late 90's.

Underrated, many thought Bingham was going to beat him...

In that case Martinez was better; Lacy had a bigger reputation; Kessler too.

  10. Lacy :nut

The hype around him was ridiculous.

Any American that is unbeaten and has a few KO's is all of a sudden a ''mini-Tyson'' or ''the new Floyd'', when in truth they've only beaten a few clowns and will probably lose their first major test.

Hindsight is 20/20, I will admit remembering after he destroyed Reid, believing he was very much for real...

if Bute were to lose he will be compared to Lacy, if he wins he will be blown up to be P4P contender. Neither will be correct.

I don't think Martinez was particularly highly rated at the time.

Bute will be up there, no doubt. Pretty similar to Kessler at the time Joe fought him, IMO. Fought mostly sub par guys, the odd creditable win. Only Kessler was more of a big deal in terms of his status in the division, he was emphatically the other top dog whereas Bute obviously is not.
