I've just watched some PBF fights and once again I noticed something that concerned me a bit before but now it made me wonder a lot about the sport in general... Floyd likes to hold the opponent's head with one hand and suddenly bang it with the other. That's how he stunned Gatti in the first round to knock him down seconds after when Arturo tried to complain to the ref. How much does this tactic help Mayweather to win fights?... Yes I know that probably not very much but his tricks only made me think about other cases like that. Would Ali ever last 15rds with Frazier without constantly holding the back of Joe's head? Would he last long with Foreman without constantly pulling his head down (not mentioning loose ropes and BS count)? Wouldn't Wlad be out cold if he didn't hug Peter like 100 times? That just a few examples from the top of my head. What other cases do you know? What kind of victories are those?? Why do things like that happen and people in general don't seem to be bothered? That's pure BS and shame to the sport to me:deal
Every fighter who is great, has little illegal tricks they like to use. Mayweather illegally uses his elbow to push a fighter back, Hopkins likes to hold and punch when the refs not looking, go watch the CAstillo fight, he is constantly hitting Mayweather below the belt, even starts teeing off on Mayweathers back. Its common. Its like the NBA, if the ref called every foul that was a foul, the game would never end.
I get what you say but sometimes it's just ridiculuous... If someone other than Ali would do things like that to Foreman he would be DQ'd wouldn't he?
Probably not. Lots of fighters have their tricks, and usually they don't get DQ'd. After while you kind of get immune to the little tricks that fighters do and don't think too much of it (unless it's REALLY extreme). At least I do. Ali and Mayweather don't strike me as among the dirtier fighters I've seen, despite the tactics they often employ.
Its all part of the game. And its not as if its officially condoned; there are punishments for such behaviour (warnings then point deductions then disqualifications). It must be realised that this is a sport where the aim of the game is to physically assault the opponent and bring him to a state of submission; hitting and holding, use of the elbow etc is just part of the game; its one guys way of gaining an advantage over an opponent in order to win the bout. Its not the fighters fault that this stuff goes on; the ref is the one who has to take the blame if constant infractions of the rules are not punished.
I mean those extreme cases. Ali-Foreman, Wlad-Peter ARE extreme to me. Find it very hard to call them Champions. look at Frazier or Vitali on the other hand and tell me what's their trick...
Your right... tighter ropes takes away Ali`s will & determination + makes George`s punches more accurate. Big George took a short count & was in perfect condition to continue. :rofl Go home son.
Tighter ropes probably would make Foreman's punches more accurate. It hard to hit yoyo you know... Will and determination aren't always enough. George would get up and continue. And what about puuling George's head down daddy? :yep
They're not really extreme in dirtiness. Fights like Pedroza-Laporte, Gainer-Norwood, Casamayor-Katsidis, Bowe-Golota 1-2.....they make Ali-Foreman and Klitschko-Peter look clean by comparison. Frazier had some dirty tricks. I've seen him headbutt and hit low. However I do agree with the spirit of the thread in terms of those fights...the ref should properly enforce the rules.
Okay, Golota-Pou'ha instead. Biting should get you an automatic DQ. I don't know why Golota wasn't DQ'd there. You've got a replay and a friggin bite mark on the guy's neck.
It's one of those cases. He should be disqualified even after the match. There should be such possibility in general IMO. Judge watching replays and changing the verdict if necessary.
Most sports don't have instant replay, much less hours-after-the-fact replay! So hometown cooking would get even less coverage because most of them aren't filmed? Judges (of any sport, any competition of any sort, or of any qualifying test that requires professional judging) have the time/inclination to rewatch old tape of the fight they'd judged that same week? That's why there's a third man in the ring (who, except for the 2 fighters, the most important man in the ring), three judges, and a doctor. The ref's got more than enough to do between rounds; having him check that voting-booth-looking-thing to watch 3 minutes of tape recorded by some guy in the balcony on his cell phone in 1 minute is a wee bit beyond impossible, don't you think?
One more ref sitting ringside watching HBO tranmission - they easily catch any controversial situations - and if necessary deducting points etc during the break. You only talk about the technical side of the problem. even if there would be some difficoulties in the begining... You think it's better to give a victory to the guy that doesn't deserve it?
