He's been training for 3 months for this fight; a fight which could have put him back at the top of boxing. He could have won this fight, and regained his legacy.

In round 1, he hurts Joe and hurts him bad. I really do think he could have knocked Joe out then and there, but for some reason he didn't want to take the risk, but was a risk he should have taken, because Roy wasn't hurt once; Joe was, and on more than one occasion I believe.

The most annoying factor for me was that this fight took 7-8 years too late; back in 00-01', Jones destroys Calzaghe, and everyone knows it. It's just a shame that we didn't get to see these two fight at earlier (and possible better) stages of their respective carreers. It doesn't do much for Joe's legacy in my opinion, beating a 39-year-old, shell of his former self Roy Jones. If he could even land a shot on Jones 8 years ago, then perhaps he could be a great, but at the end of the day, prime for prime? Jones takes it by a mile.

And one final matter. When Joe and Roy came in for exchanges, from what I saw, they kept clashing heads. This is obviously common with Southpaw V Orthodox, but I honestly feel this caused Roy Jones' left eye to swell. I remember seeing it between the 5-6 round, and I knew it was ready to cut, even with the weakest of punches. When the cut opened, I had the fight even and I'm sure most people had it close by that stage, with Joe perhaps leading by a point. All the way through rounds 1-6, Roy was landing big shots on Calzaghe, and making him stumble at times, which may have taken an affect on Calzaghe, if Jones was to keep landing the big shots throughout the later rounds. But, because of the cut, it was obvious he couldn't see, couldn't move and most importantly, couldn't punch. Everything Roy was doing until the cut, he couldn't do after. All he could do after was try and survive, and he did that to be fair to him. I was slightly disappointed with Roy in the 12th - he knew he had to go for the KO, he knew he was losing the fight, but he didn't throw one big shot by my account.

But, Roy's gave all boxing fans something to talk about over his fabulous career, and I'm so glad to be born into this world when I could turn on the TV, and watch a 160, a 168, a 175 and at one stage, a 193 pound machine, destroy, showboat at, and just utterly overwhelm opponents and make them look like they're nothing

I honestly think we won't see Roy again lace em up, but regardless of what he does, perhaps become a promoter, Roy is still one of the greats, and had a truely Fantastic career. :good

I agree with most of what u said. But, roy to me only won one round, the first.
The replay showed that cut over the eye was from a calzaghe left hand. Anybody who follows boxing and is a die-hard fan knows Joe was protected his whole career. There is no doubt to this. Nobody even knew who he was until he fought lacy. And that's a fact. He's a worst cherrypicker than floyd in my book. At least floyd took chances in the early part of his career against castillo and corales. The same can not be said for Joe.

Roy was not there to win. He wanted to go the distance. Very much like the third Tarver fight.

why does this surprise you? Roy's whole career was based on not taking any risks.

Do you honestly think he can't lose? Many people feel he already has two losses. Do you think he'd have beaten a prime Jones or a prime Hopkins? You're having a laugh mate.

The cut was unfortunate for Roy and changed the entire fight, but I don't think it would have mattered had he not been cut. I gave Roy the first two rounds but mid-way through the fight he started to look like the older fighter. Joe on the other hand seems to get better as the fight goes on.

Prime or not prime it takes a lil difference to make. Joe won and thats it. Give credit for the win but don't overrate his win.

hang on a minute, if he was so protected? why did hopkins duck calzaghe few years back? why didnt jones publicly call out calzaghe? in his so called prime fact is jones is just as guilty for not making the fight. no one can question joe, he came to america, beat both them. you wanna talk about cherry picking name me 1 other fighter hopkins fought other than tarver who was a natural at hopkins weight, winky?oscar?tito?........hopkins built his career beating on lil guys.

p.s. jones knockdown wasnt even a punch it was a whole forearm in the face. im just suprised jones didnt try hit him when he was down like he did with montell.

congratulations on an extremely bias post.

prime for prime, calzaghe would have too much for jones, hopkins, or toney - america needs to get over it.

something that seems to get lost in all this is that joe turns 37 himself soon.

What is there to be dissapointed about? I expected this completely shot version of Jones to get blown out of there, and not only was he able to take everything Calzaghe threw, he actually dropped him and was very competitive through the first half of the fight. I was dissapointed in Calzaghe more than anything. I think it's very apparent to anyone with a brain what would've happened had the two met in their primes, aside from a bunch of biased Brits.
