So does anyone still think Martin Rogan would beat Joe Louis?

Martin Rogan would beat Joe Louis easily. It's just that Sam Sexton has his number.

A bit like Mike Tyson would always lose to Evander Holyfield..... but beat Frank Bruno.

If a guy was the best in his era, he will, given time to acclimate, be great in any era. Because greatness goes much deeper than mere appearance.

A champion will enter the ring feeling, thinking, plotting, performing like a champion, every split-second he is in there. He cannot do anything but. He is a champion. A journeyman such as Rogie can only rise to the level of his own incompetence.

I think notions such as "the Entertainer" over the Brown Bomber are a disservice to worthwhile analysis. Comparing Louis to other historically great champions is endlessly fascinating. Matching him with midgets isn't.

 

To hear some people on this forum speak you wonder that Joe Louis managed to beat anyone.

I mean how did he make it past Johny Paycheck for christs sake?

Why even give them time to aclimatise?

How many times have we seen a willy old veteran of 40 outside of his own prime and his own era, put on the gloves and teach a younger fighter a thing or two?

Who is to say that Jem Mace couldn't step into the modern ring and show the curent crop of fighters a few tricks they had never seen before?

 

Rock-solid point certainly our own Bill can attest to.

Not much acclimation needed for Rogan. I was thinking matching Louis, Johnson or Dempsey up against a guy at or near their level of accomplishment, from a more modern era. Giving Dempsey, for example, the same preparation options (including "enhancements") that a Holyfield had access to.

Certainly Johnson would need to study film of Ali, Tyson or Lewis in preparation in order to adjust his style and strategy for a megamatch. His savvy boxing mind would certainly prepare surprises for this trio or any other great that, frankly, we as basically mere enthusiasts can hardly imagine.

Rogan is tough cookie but would have just been another bum of the month for Louis.
Louis would have hit Rogan at will and administered a huge beating.

Exactly right!!! I have all the respect in the world for modern fighters. And I also have all the respect in the world for the old-time fighters. That's the balanced approach classic boxing fans should take...in my opinion, of course...neither favoring the old-timers nor writing them off, based on the years they fought in, or because no good quality films are available.
