The fighter is indicative OF THE BELT he wears around his waist. You never saw the best fighters in the world trumpetting the virtues of the WBU/WBF or the WBO for that matter. The same accusation can be leveled at Joe as prior to his fight with Lacy hardly any of his WBO defences were worth squat. The WBO belt historically has always had the weaker champions. Citing Joe as an example when its clear he is now an exception to the rule is fairly academic. The facts remain that by and large WBO champions and contenders are generally the weaker champs in there divisions. The marquee names that do win that belt again normally give it up after a few defences. The often coined phrase that fighters make the belts is simply bull****. If Ricky won the WBU again tommorow i assure there wont be ANY fighter at 140lbs in a hurry to challenge for it.

Hamed, Barrera, De la Hoya are just 3 names off the top of my head that held the WBO title for a long time.

I certainly wouldn't class the WBO as being in the same bracket as the WBU. it's far more credible than that.

Wlad aside I think you'll not find another WBO champ at any weight who is Ring no 1.

    I roughly agree with you

But as TOFFEJACK pointed out there are a good few exceptions to your rule

Oscar De La Hoya was even a WBO Champion

Also Enzo Maccarenelli is not stopping with the WBO title

he has made his plans quite clear............he plans to clean up the division and wants the belts unified over the next 18 months

    thats right

    WBC
    IBF
    WBA
    WBO

    serious question

there is alot of negative things said about Maccarnelli on these boards

    why?

he is a decent guy.........a decent human being

he suffered a bad loss last time

but that dont erase all the good work he done before that fight

he did himself no favours by continually saying he made a simple mistake against haye, if he hade just said, ****, didn't think he would hit that hard / be that quick he would have got far more respect.
    he comes across as delusional.

someone said that Enzo said that he found Haye had "incredibile speed"

but Enzo still said he made a "sloppy mistake" and still thinks he is better than Haye...............................I think thats the main thing that people find hard to swallow after seeing the way the fight went

Oscar used the WBO correctly back at the beginning of his career as a stepping stone. Because he was there 130lb champ he got a crack at 35 and took the title there. Either way it wasnt a belt that he clung onto as did Artur Grigorian, Joe Calzaghe or Michalczewski. All of those 3 fighters defended that belt for long periods of times spanning multiple defenses an invaribly at some stage of there career the quality of there opponents was scrutinised intently. As for Barrera he held the WBO because he was boycotting the WBC and refused to be there champ. Again much like like DLH it was only a stepping stone bauble.

Enzo can speculate as much as he wants. Il believe it when i see it. When was the last time a Warren fighter fought and won a belt other than the WBO? Theres none that spring to my mind. Even when Hatton and Joe were in his stable Warren purposefully steered Hatton down that route only to reneg on his number 1 ranking. And he steered Joe down the same route and had no interest in a unification or any other titles.

He refused there belt i believe the second time when he fought Morales and won. It was nothing more than bitterness on his part for the 1st decision loss. As he went on to win WBC at the higher weights and has featured in quite a few recent WBC bouts.
