So Fitzsimmons gets destroyed 2x by Jeffries yet he has a shot vs Louis and Marciano?

    Yaaaaaaa Rightttt :patsch

Louis, Marciano, Dempsey, Liston, Frazier, Foreman, Tyson...these men are not getting outpunched by a supermiddleweight.

To be fair he put some serious damage on Jeffries, who is arguably the most durable Heavyweight ever, but was outlasted, and this was done after his prime.

Not many Heavyweights would have stood up to them bombardments that Fitz put on Jeffries IMO, but you can make the case that the guys you mentioned wouldn't have let Fitz have the oppertunity to inflict that much damage, and I'd have to agree there.

I don't think he beats them guys, but I don't think you can completly dismiss him like you have.

He fought similarly sized opponents to Marciano, and only lost to Jeffries in anything close to his heavyweight prime. Moreover, he was heavyweight champion of the world. Corbett, Maher x2, Sharkey x2, and Ruhlin may not quite equal Marciano's record, but they're an impressive group of fighters.

Seriously, is size the only argument you're bringing to bear here? If so, why doesn't 185-pound Marciano get massacred by everybody from Liston onward? If Fitzsimmons was larger -- Jeffries' size, perhaps -- but had an identical record, then the matchup wouldn't seem so absurd.

The two are alike in one respect: Marciano represents perhaps the pinnacle of a 185 pound fighter's abilities, which is why he could compete with the likes of Frazier or Ali in a time machine bout. He was freakishly good for his size. So was Fitz.

...As a sidenote, why didn't you just post this in the Marciano vs. Fitzsimmons thread? :huh

Not that I mind, of course, but you often make good points and it would be a shame if we didn't consolidate them into a single conversation.

When I saw the "Fitz over Louis" picks in another thread, it sent me over the edge. I couldn't take it anymore.

I was reading an article on Ezzard Charles the other day from 1942 after his first win over Joey Maxim, it said if he could beat Bivins (and it seemed to assume he would) he could beat every other fighter in the world barring Conn and Louis. Providing he weighed around 170lbs.

I'm not sure what that little caveat at the end is insinuating, but to me it seems like the author, who was described as a long time boxing character who had handled champions but remained anonymous for whatever reason, perhaps thought that around 170lbs was the optimal weight for a fighter to be able to compete with Heavyweights.

I don't think anybody picked Fitzsimmons in that thread. The most that anybody said was that Louis would have the edge but that Fitz had a good chance, which is pretty much what Louis's own contemporaries thought as well.

Style wise and power, I give Jimmy Jeff a legit shot at "Louis & Marciano" way more then any chance I'd give the over-hyped Bobby Fitz..... No **** there...

Yet Fitzsimmons did better against Sharkey (twice) and a younger version of Corbett than Jeffries did, and he beat Ruhlin as well...

You answered this yourself in another post Suze.
Jeffries was not the banger Marciano was ,nor the precision combination killer Louis was.He was a rugged, durable, powerful grinder.
You don't need an old fogey like me to tell you how you perform with one boxer is not a reliable guide to your success against another.

If today there was a HW who went life and death with Carl Froch twice, was outboxed for 20rounds by Bernhard Hopkins before scoring a late knockout and then stepped up against his first 200+ opponent in John Ruiz only to get knocked out late.......well today that wouldn't usually give a figher the title of 'most durable HW ever'.......just saying

Yes because Froch has proven to knock out Heavyweights cold with one punch, time and time again. Hasn't he? And he is often regarded as one of the best punchers of all time.
