No, fighting unimpressive opposition and staying in your comfort zone is not unprecedented.

Few fighters ever became great with a resume like Golovkin's in modern times.

 

Remaining in your division and continually cleaning it out has been achieved by quite a few and they are respected for it. It has even been done a number of times by middleweights.

Nothing new at being way too good for your opposition.

 

Those who seek challenges are more respected though.

Many fighters have also been criticised for not fighting elite opposition.

 

No serious boxing fan doesn't recognise GGG as being great.

 

What did he do to be Great?

 

Part of remaining in a division for a long period of time, particularly for a once in a generation middleweight like GGG, is he will simply destroy many opponents. In the process he devalues what those opponents have previously achieved and lowers their overall standing.

It's a catch 22. The more dominant you become the more critical it makes some people because you make your opposition look so bad.

 

Wrong. You can't be considered truly great with a resume like Golovkin's. He needs to beat some better opponents or prove himself in another weight class.

 

If GGG remains at 160 and retires undefeated (or even close to it) having cleaned out, and re-cleaned out the division, he will rightly be remembered as a great. Many knowledgeable followers of the sport rate him a great already.

When you put it that way it doesn't sound too bad but as a fan of GGG and boxing you can see why this fight stinks. This is the business side I hate I wish he would move up. Not that 168 is flush with talent but there are no challenges for him at 160.
